Re: Telfairs A Daddy Now
Let's hope he marries her and sticks around to raise the child. The world doesn't need another black kid growing up without a dad.

....
The world doesn't need another any color kid raising up without any parent.
Edit:
The Portland Tribune said he was expecting a baby girl, in their edition a few weeks back.

Re: Telfairs A Daddy Now
Or how about just ANY kid. Why the **** does it have to be about color? Sometimes, I swear the ignorance in this world is just downright disgusting!

How about the world doesn't need another kid period growing up without a dad? Wouldn't that sound more appropriate?

Re: Telfairs A Daddy Now
Get a grip, people. The percent of illegitimate births in the black community runs about 70%. Watch the NBA draft sometime. About 90% of the guys are their with just their mothers or their grandmothers. Absent fathers is a HUGE problem in the black community and a big reason why the cycle of poverty continues. Why can't we talk about this stuff directly instead of getting all bent out of shape about it and saying people are being "politically incorrect"?

It's good that you want to deal directly and honestly with the issues, but you do it in such a hateful way that your hate undermines your supposed desire to deal with the issues.
First of all, the thread was about Telfair having a child. You don't know Sebastian, you don't know his girlfriend, and you don't know the situation, so for you to automatically come on the thread and make it into a racial thing is shady. Can't someone post about Sebastian having a baby without it turning into a political thread? You just should've posted in the political forum if this issue was that important to you.
Two more things:
1) Do you think Telfair's kid will grow up in poverty? Nope. Why do you think that is? First of all, Telfair makes big bucks, which brings up a horrible turth about poverty and "illegitimacy": sexism, and the whole female dependency thing underlies the connection. So, sexism is really a huge part of the problem here, but it won't apply to Telfair's child, because he makes big bucks and even if he were to leave the child, he'd have to pay child support.
2) So why is black "illegitimacy" (I absolutely hate that term) at 70%? Is it because black people naturally tend to have children out of wedlock? Is it a result of slavery/racism? Is it a mixture? It's easy to look at surface statistics and use them to make simplistic explanations. But you've gotta look deeper.
I suggest you take this discussion into the political forum thread and continue it there, so the thread can continue with its original purpose and you can express your opinions on this issue.

Why can't you just respond 'congrats' or 'who cares' instead of pushing your right-wing political agenda?

I think you're reading what you want to into my post. I look at these things from a sociological point of view, and I see what is happening in the black community regarding illigitimate births. I know, for instance, that Shawn Kemp has children with about 8 different women. Sports Illustrated did a story on Kemp and other NBA players who have fathered numerous children out of wedlock. I also know the effects on young black boys when they grow up without a father. Many of them become very angry and bitter, and this often leads to crime, violence, or drug abuse. Shaq and other players have talked about what it's like to grow up without a biological father around, and it's not a pretty picture.
So when I hear that another Black player has fathered a child out of wedlock, I have a hard time getting all warm and fuzzy about it. I see the larger picture, and I know the pattern that exists. I wish Telfair all the best, and hope that he does the right thing by his child and his girlfriend.
