Re: Thoughts about Portland (misconceptions v. reality)
I never said I was better than anyone else......You assumed that, because I said I dislike 16-year old punk/freaks, that wear all black, have ridiculous piercings, blue hair......etc. The reason: bad parenting, that is the reason for many of our social problems in this country.....Losers having kids, breeding more losers, and their kids are losers......It never ends. I don't need to hear about how bad some little *******s life is....Living in their two-story home, driving the nice cars mommy and daddy bought them.....
If you like the 'burbs....Fine.
I don't like putting up with the stupid kids......That's all I said. I don't avoid for any reason other than, I am a grown man.....If I want to go out, I stay in the city.

Did they ban kids in Portland?
I musta missed that memo.
Have you been to downtown anytime this summer? Place is overrun with kids. And during school months, we have the fun with the street kids. Man those kids are so much better to rub shoulders with than those snotty suburban brats.

Maybe you should move to a retirement community...
Check out Pioneer square sometime...seems to me that of these "kids" you dislike hang out there alot.
FYI stay downtown, please don't move into my neighborhood.

Portland is not unique in that regard. Driving is bad in pretty much every city.

Slow down buddy. Not all the people that that wear black/goth punk/pierceings etc are bad kids. You shouldn't make blanket statements like that. Also because kids are expressing themselves doesn't mean they have bad parents.
As far as anyone messing with you. I'm not really sure what you mean by that, care to give an example ? I find the same kind of kids in the city as I do in the "burbs" though.

Something else that I find funny...alot of those same people think that Portland is basically made up of Nike and that's about it..they think Nike is all we have out here. Also when you ask them "Waht do you know about Portland.." they say " it rains alot out there and ask isn't Nike based there?"
|
Well, Nike is the only Fortune 500 company based in Oregon, which is pretty pathetic compared to the 20 or so corporations of that stature that are headquartered in Boise, Idaho.
As for people being ignorant about Portland...I honestly could care less and even like it to some extent. The last thing I was is a bunch of people rushing in and making the valley an overcroweded area. The area around Portland is already growing at a very fast rate, and would like for Oregon to stay nice and as "undiscovered" for as long as possible.

That's sort of a problem in the natural evolutionary manner of things. In other species, the dominant alpha male mates with all the females and then the females support the children pretty much on their own. Males are not really monogomous creatures, and women are. The difference is that it is pretty difficult to raise children in a one-income family, let alone when there is only one parent to take care of everything.
More than anything else, I think the problem comes from the increasingly number of untraditional, "broken" homes, where kids have parents who split up or abandon them at a young age. I could get more personal on this subject, but I'll leave it that my observations lead me to see that healthy happy homes, of which there are less and less, is the only way to really raise normal kids.
As for the emo/punk kids...I was at the Warped Tour this last weekend and there were a bunch of pretty freaky looking people there with wacked out hair and piercing, etc. However, most of them looked completely normal and thus, while it is easy to stereotype, it is not always accurate (especially in a case like this).

So, they were freaky looking people who looked completely normal? So is freaky normal, or is normal freaky?
