Re: What country are we living in, anyway?
It is reported in Cleveland Ohio that in a heavily minority precinct NONE of the voting machines work. The poll workers have repeatedly called the Bureau of Elections (it should be noted that the Secretary of State, who is responsible for overseeing elections, is the Republican candidate for governor), and have been told the problem will be fixed in 5-10 minutes FOR 3 HOURS. They are giving voters provisional ballots and writing on them that they are real ballots. A number of potential voters have left.
In Illinois, a voter reports he was ordered to produce a photo ID, although state law prohibits such a demand. He reported that a woman in line ahead of him left distraught because she was unable to vote as a result of not having a photo ID.
I am not a Democrat and if anyone has stories of Democrats suppressing votes I will post them as well. But so far they are all in the other direction.

Mine, was an attempt at "humor". I hope for fair elections today. I hope everyone who is a legal resident of this wonderful country and elegible to vote - does so.
Go GOP!!

Re: What country are we living in, anyway?
In Colorado, the offices of Democratic candidate Jay Fawcett was vandalized with skunk spray, rendering it unusable, and a death threat was mailed.
In South Carolina, the Republican governor was not allowed to vote because he could not show a voter registration card. The state's first lady had her card and was permitted to vote.
An 800 number has been published where people can phone in voting problems. Right wing talk show host Laura Ingraham has asked her listeners to block the phone line by calling and playing tapes of Bill Clinton. The line is now being flooded with crank calls and voters with problems are having trouble getting through. Amazing, she insists the war in Iraq is defending democracy but has trouble with democracy in the US.

is the 2nd fact true, or just a "urban legend"? I don't recall how it ended.

Not quite either, Hap. That was stated in the supplemental opinion by Justice Scalia, that it would cause irreparable damage to Bush by calling into question the legitimacy of his election. So it is not the "official" ruling of the Court but it is not myth.
Google is a wonderful thing.

Re: What country are we living in, anyway?
More news:
Armed men are harassing Latino voters in Arizona. A precinct worker has reported that when Latino voters approach polling places, they are confronted by 3 men. One is wearing what appears to be a badge and holding a clipboard. This man approaches the voter and starts questioning him/her. The second man videotapes the conversation. The third man stands next to the prospective voter, also wearing what appears to be a badge, and with a revolver prominently displayed in a holster at his side.
The badges are apparently phony and are intended to frighten voters into thinking these men are law enforcement.
In Washington, it is reported that there are no problems so far.

More states need to allow voting by mail.

A widely circulated voice mail purportedly proving Republican voter intimidation in the bruising Virginia Senate race turned out to be a hoax.
Earlier in the day, after complaints from staffers for Democratic Senate candidate James Webb, the FBI launched a probe into the voice-mail message that informed a voter he would face criminal prosecution if he showed up at the polls.
But Virginia Democratic Party attorney Jay Meyerson contacted Jean Jensen, the executive secretary of the Virginia State Board of Elections, and told her that the voter — a Clarendon, Va., resident — "was the victim of a hoax," Jensen told ABC News.

I don't know about the rest of the irregularities that you list, crandc, but this case demonstrates that there's often a lot of hyperbole floating around the internet on election day.

Re: What country are we living in, anyway?
Republicans pride themselves about living in a country that is run with a democracy. These actions they're taking to try win is far from something that should happen in a democracy ran country.
BTW, Talkhard, were you a member of Reverend Haggards church?

Re: What country are we living in, anyway?
These things are hard to beleive. Some of them are undoubtedly true, and some are probably hyperbole. I am sure we will figure out even more as the days become weeks after the election.
However, I do have a personal story that fits with the subject.
Before the last presidential election, me and a few friends registered to vote at the community college we were attending, Umpqua Community College. There was a little table set up just for that purpose in the main student area. I expected it to be quite official and unbiased since it was seemingly connected with my college. Anyways, when the ballots were mailed out, mine did not come. Everyone else in my family received theirs, but mine was obviously missing. I waited a bit.....waited some more. It didn't come. So, I called the number written on my family's voter pamplets to report my problem. I told them my name, where I registered, and that I did not receive my pamplet. The nice lady then asked if I had happened to register as a Democrat when I filled out my form. I said yes. She told me that the voter registration kiosk at UCC was run by a local republican group and that they had received about 60 calls exactly like mine from other democrats. Apparently, they were throwing out all of the registration forms that weren't republican. So, the kind lady, after filling me in on what happened, sent me a voter's pamphlet over night.
Just my experience.
