As an independent, I have to laugh when people like Pelosi are called super liberal or even "far left". If you look at what she is proposing to put on the agenda, it includes increasing the minimum wage, tax breaks for middle class but rescinding tax cuts for super-wealthy, carrying out the recommendations of the Sept. 11 commission and lobbying reform. Most Americans support these things. And few Americans agree with Musgrave that THE most important issue facing the country is gay marriage.

the funny thing about Nancy being called a "extreme liberal", is that if you ACTUALLY look at her voting record (instead of just repeating what conservative talking heads say) she's actually pretty moderate. As one guy said it (I don't recall who..maybe it was Scarborough) "she's not liberal enough in the eyes of many" people from San Fransisco.

Re: It's a good day to be a Democrat
Nominated to take his place is Robert Gates. Gates testified in the Iran-Contra scandal (which unlike Lewinsky's dress, did involve real national issues); he avoided indictment because evidence was not considered strong enough against him for a conviction. However, when he was nominated by Bush I to head the CIA, the nomination had to be withdrawn; because of his involvement in Iran-Contra, it was clear the Senate would not confirm him.
Talk about meet the new boss same as the old boss!
Clearly, Rumsfeld is afraid of being called to testify in the Senate about what went wrong in Iraq, where he said that the occupation would be a matter of weeks, not months or years....

Don't you ever get tired of your own bombast? Liberals have been screaming that Bush is a fascist and is destroying our constitutional rights, yet it's others who are using "scare tactics"?? Talk about the white elephant in the room! You couldn't see it if it was standing on your head.
I congratulate the Democrats on winning. I hope they can work with the White House to accomplish some good things for this country in the next 2 years. And I'm quite sure that the Democrat leadership has 10 times as much civility and common sense as you do, thank God.

They already made way with too many Billions.
It’s a great day to be an American. Two years ago people ignored a horribly planned war based on lies and blatant corruption. They voted values. At this point we had quite possibly the stupidest electorate in American history. Now the focus is on fixing the horribly planned war and ending corruption. I don’t know why we had to wait two years for the voters to get Jesus.
When you look at all of the moderate Republicans that got the boot it’s a clear decree that our representatives better stay clean or they wont last.

They should be. The commander-in-chief of the "War on Terror" is still the same for two more years. Bush has been the best thing to happen to terrorism since suicide bombers replaced suicide catapultees.

Yeah, here in the People's Republic of SF she's pretty much considered to be a right-winger. As is Mayor Gavin "Gay Marriage" Newsom.
In reality she's a very mainstream liberal, with very mainstream American values and political priorities. She'll do a good job as Speaker, I think.

Re: It's a good day to be a Democrat
I'm a big fan of Pelosi as Speaker.
And I'd love to see Newsom as President one day. Maybe after a couple terms of an Obama presidency.

Re: It's a good day to be a Democrat
I am just so dang happy.
First the House, then the Senate, then Rummy leaves and now k-fed and Brittney Spears are breaking up.

Re: It's a good day to be a Democrat
The AP just called the Virginia race for Webb. So unless there is a recount that discovers something odd, the Dems have the Senate

Re: It's a good day to be a Democrat
I hope you people are right. It is hard for me to believe that anything is going to get better.
I want America to be a better place than it was when I was a kid. I don't think anything I have witnessed from either party is going to make that happen. Gay rights and abortion are the least of our problems.
Illegal immigration and the growing gap between rich and poor are the most important issues of our times. Being independent while being part of the world is also important.
I don't even know what to say really, I just know in my heart that America is in a bad way right now.
