NY Daily News: We are Witnessing a Democratic Train Wreck
Quote:
With only 10 contests left, the campaign is turning on Wright's outlandish anti-American statements and Obama's tepid reaction to them. Obama seems flummoxed by the complexities of the racial polarization he promised to heal and the party is being divided in a way that could sink him. He's even making things worse for himself as his silver tongue has gotten tied in knots.
. . . You can't be a President if you won't stand up to an anti-American bigot. More to the point, you can't become President by running against the country or having people around you who hate it.

Re: NY Daily News: We are Witnessing a Democratic Train Wreck
The Democrats are following the old addage that used to be ascribed to the Palestinians, "they never fail to miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity."
A few months ago, the Republicans were as dead as dead could be. The only thing that could have given them a chance to win was a protracted fight among the Dems. This fight between Clinton and Obama is far worse than anyone in the Party could have imagined. If it were any other candidate than Sen. Clinton, they would have been pressured to drop out by now. The problem for the Democrats is that the Clintons have more power in the Party than does the leadership.
I spend half the year in Denver. I have a few friends of mine who are cops and they're really concerned. They have received additional money in their budget and are already undergoing training for riot control. They held an auction for park space (for protesters) and one of the most visible parks and times went to an organization called "Bring Back '68". Now, what do you think that organization is going to do with their time?
This could be the WTO in Seattle all over again and you can believe that the networks will cover what's going on outside the convention as much as what's going on inside. This development could be disasterous to the Democrats.
The model is tried and true: In the primaries, you appeal to your base, which often exists on the fringes; in the general you try to grab the center. This fight between Clinton and Obama means that they're still going after their bases. Whoever wins is going to have a real issue of getting the base of the loser to turn out. Any riots that occur are going to reflect badly on whoever wins the nomination in the eyes of centrist voters.
What's worse for Democrats is that McCain isn't the standard Republican candidate from the right wing of the party. Usually you could run an anti-Bush message, but it's not going to stick to McCain. He's been too independent in his time as a Senator. He's also had a five month head start on trying to secure the center of this country.
If you brought this script to Hollywood last year, they would toss you out on your ear as the premise would simply be too unbelievable.

Re: NY Daily News: We are Witnessing a Democratic Train Wreck
Wow-McCain is one of the worst criminals in US history. He was busted for corruption, and was in the middle of the Savings and Loans scandal. Yet Obama has a preecher that speaks about race in the United States in a "hateful" way and Obama has the problem?
The only thing independent about McCain is when he chooses to fart. That guy is more paid-off than a girl with Elliot Spitzer at the Motel 6. He is a whore for money, and works for those that will pay for him to be in power. That we know, as for Obama he did condemn the words of his pastor.
I hate the words of GW, but I still live here and pay taxes. Does that mean I support GW?

Come on Sug...let's be real here. McCain is old, and like all old people, he doesn't choose when he farts. It just happens randomly.

Re: NY Daily News: We are Witnessing a Democratic Train Wreck
I'm not convinced at all about any of these dire predictions. The pundits want it to happen because it would be more interesting to write about (and indeed, it is more interesting to write about now), but the chances of anything like that actually happening are slim.
All that's going on here is a contested primary. It's happened many many times before, in both parties. The country (and the parties) have survived.
And while your friends in the cop world may be training for riots, maxiep, cops train for the worst case scenario. I'm sure they've trained for lots of stuff that they haven't faced in reality.

I assume you are following the campaign? J-Mac wants to make them permanent, hence he voted against them but now supports them fully. Which shows his economic prospect.

And, in keeping with the original topic:
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...0323?hub=World
There's a long way to go until November, but the best thing the McCain camp has going for it is the Democrats.

You mean he trusts that the American people know what to do with their money better than the Government? Heresy!
The problem with the Federal Government isn't revenue, it's expenses.

Re: NY Daily News: We are Witnessing a Democratic Train Wreck
Has this drawn out battle for the nomination between Hillary and Obama been ideal? Hell no.
But - I still hold firm that when there is a clear distinction between the prospect for change (Clinton or Obama) and the prospect of more of the same disastrous policies of the current Bush administration (McCain), the nation will make the correct decision in November.

Republican - Ron Paul is a Republican. Both parties have big tents. Is everyone in every party exactly the same? I guess someone had better talk to Joe Lieberman.
Iraq - It's good to know no Democrats voted for Iraq.
Bush Tax Cuts For The Rich (I love this one) - He actually voted against it because it didn't have accompanying expense cuts. Now that he may have a larger say in the size of the Federal Budget, he agrees they should be continued--expect expenditures to go down.
Party Boy Who Used Influence Rather Than Brains To Get Ahead - By "party boy" do you mean his five-and-a-half year throwdown at the Hanoi Hilton? Woo hoo!

yeah, he's flip flopped on every issue that made him an "independant" Republican. Tax cuts, torture, bowing to the looney tunes fanatics of the Christian Right... you name it, he's flip flopped on it to the point he's goosestepping in line with GWB. He's waffle-rific!
Given the publics approval rating of the president hovering under 25% for the last year, you can count on the Democrat nominee linking those two more often then Rudi says 9-11.
