The last cookie
OK, here is a thoroughly nonpolitical topic to mull. A question of group psychology.
Why does no one want to eat, or more precisely be caught eating, the last cookie?
I bring cookies to work weekly and set them in the lunchroom. They go really fast until there is one left. No one wants to be seen taking that last cookie. Eating the last cookie is no more greedy than eating the second to last. But it only goes when someone is alone in the lunchroom. I've talked to coworkers and they all agree, no one has ever seen anyone actually take the last cookie and none of them want to be seen taking the last cookie.
I brought fig rum squares today. There is one cookie left.

I never really paid any attention to it before, but you are right. I guess people just feel guilty for taking the last one.

As long as there are several cookies, there is the appearance of being able to take without taking from the other people (even though the cookies are limited and therefore any taking is at the expense of what others can have). The moment it drops to one, it is immediately apparent to everyone that taking it means taking it away from everyone else.
There's no extra real significance to the last cookie. There's just the removal of the convenient fiction that taking is no loss to anyone else. Social graces make it difficult for many people to take, from a shared resource, without that fiction.

I always wind up taking the last cookie in pretty much any opportunity. I just happen to be good at knowing when nobody is looking.
