Award sizes are based on a couple of factors. One is the resources of the party at fault, and the Knicks and Madison Square Garden have huge resources. Most trucking companies are pretty mom & pop. Also the lost earnings of the injured party. A highly paid professional has greater lost earnings than a minimum wage part time Wal-Mart worker. And the quality of the lawyer. Well paid professionals in a highly publicized case get better lawyers than working stiffs.
So I have no quibble with the size of the award against the Knicks. My quibble is with Wal-Mart. It's bs to say they have to follow the rules. They made the damn rules. And as Keith Olbermann pointed out they could have bought themselves enormous good PR with the $400K. They're just scum.
