Julie Nixon backs Obama

No joke: http://blogs.usatoday.com/onpolitics...r-eisenho.html

Julie Nixon Eisenhower, daughter of Richard Nixon, and the only family member really close to him, a Bush backer in 2004, is now supporting Barack Obama. Daddy must be spinning in his grave.

Re: Julie Nixon backs Obama

Obama's primary victories were often in low-population states that will go Republican in November. He attracts Republicans, who will return to the Republican candidate in 2012. Obama is built upon a house of cards. Crandc, after 38 years of media energy from women's groups, why isn't Hillary's candidacy more energetic? Why don't we see, daily in the national media, women's groups backing her?

You raise several points, Hector.

First one, not really true. Obama has won small states but has done well in large states also. Many are Democratic or so-called swing states. Attracting Republicans and independents would be important in a general election. And in the big states Clinton won, her margins have gotten smaller and smaller, including in Pennsylvania which is, after all, her home state. And no one knows what will happen in 2008, let alone 2012.

Why don't women's rights groups back Clinton? Well, some do. And you know, I've had some sympathy for her. For women of a certain age, it's so typical to work your behind off, and when the time comes for a big promotion, there's always a "good reason" why it goes to a younger man. But I also think Clinton has squandered some of that support with her negativity, race-baiting, providing Republican talking points, perceived dishonesty, etc. Also, Clinton has expected support from women but has not given it back. For example, she has not appeared with female candidates in local races even when so requested. More and more women are getting the impression it's just about her.

I also think Obama is one of these phenomena that come down the pike once in a great while; against any "normal" candidate, Clinton would have no trouble.

Funny thing, I think Clinton would make a pretty decent President. And I think Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton would be unbeatable; they have different strengths and different constituencies. They really have few policy differences. It's become personal and it seems more and more like ambition is coming first. Clinton has rightly taken heat for this but Obama is not guiltless either.

Re: Julie Nixon backs Obama

Democrats won't be split between two canidates when the election comes up. Trying to project final election results based upon primaries, is a reach at best. Now that being said, I also think that a person of no real note supporting Obama, is not that big of a deal. So what if she is Nixons daughter. I didn't even know who she was until now, so what kind of effect do you think it will really have?

Re: Julie Nixon backs Obama

Its significant as Ronald Reagan Jr is a die hard liberal. Whatever makes you happy.

Two months ago I would have never figured an Obama/Clinton ticket. My guess was Gore, Richardson or some lesser-known white southern congressman. Times have changed. Clinton is making a rather deceitful but marketable argument that she has the most votes and polls are stating that anywhere between 30 and 60 percent of Clinton supports wont vote for Obama. Now I think that is wild range will come down to under 30 when a candidate is selected. Its still a concern and one way to mend it is a Clinton Obama ticket and Obama can make an intellectually dishonest but marketable case for Clinton because she received so many votes.
