Surprising facts about Iraq
Did you know???
Did you know . . .
47 countries have re-established their embassies in Iraq?
The Iraqi government currently employs 1.2 million Iraqi people?
3100 schools have been renovated, 364 schools are under rehabilitation, 263 new schools are now under construction, and 38 new schools have been completed in Iraq?
Iraq's higher educational structure consists of 20 universities, 46 Institutes or colleges and 4 research centers, all currently operating?
25 Iraq students departed for the United States in January 2005 for the re-established Fulbright program?
The Iraqi Navy is operational? They have 5-100-foot patrol craft, 34 smaller vessels, and a naval infantry regiment.
Iraq's Air Force consists of three operational squadrons, which includes 9 reconnaissance and 3 US C-130 transport aircraft (under Iraqi operational control)which operate day and night, and will soon add 16 UH-1 helicopters and 4 Bell Jet Rangers?
Iraq has a counter-terrorist unit and a Commando Battalion?
The Iraqi Police Service has over 55,000 fully trained and equipped police officers?
There are 5 Police Academies in Iraq that produce over 3500 new officers every 8 weeks?
There are more than 1100 building projects going on in Iraq? They include 364 schools, 67 public clinics, 15 hospitals, 83 railroad stations, 22 oil facilities, 93 water facilities and 69 electrical facilities.
96% of Iraqi children under the age of 5 have received the first 2 series of polio vaccinations?
4.3 million Iraqi children were enrolled in primary school by mid October?
There are 1,192,000 cell phone subscribers in Iraq and phone use has gone up 158%?
Iraq has an independent media that consists of 75 radio stations, 180 newspapers and 10 television stations?
The Baghdad Stock Exchange opened in June of 2004?
2 candidates in the Iraqi presidential election had a televised debate recently?
OF COURSE WE DIDN'T KNOW!
WHY DIDN'T WE KNOW?
BECAUSE... OUR MEDIA WOULDN'T TELL US!
Instead of reflecting our love for our country, we get photos of flag burning incidents at Abu Grab and people throwing snowballs at the presidential motorcades.
Tragically, the lack of accentuating the positive in Iraq serves two purposes: It is intended to undermine the world's perception of the United States, thus minimizing consequent support, and it is intended to discourage American citizens.
The above facts are verifiable on the Department of Defense web site.

Nope....and I still don't know because I see no credible source for any of this information you have posted.
Did it come from somewhere? Department of defense website? You can't give a link?

Perhaps he should change the title...the word "facts" doesn't seem to be quite right.

So, did you get these "facts" from a reliable source, like oh, drudge or the white house or what?

Re: Surprising facts about Iraq
Gee, what a surprise. Any good news from Iraq is always greeted with skepticism and scorn around here. Sorry to disturb. Go on about your lives.

I'd love to see good news from Iraq. I just don't think a three-year-old email forward of dubious provenance counts as "good news," or really as "news" as all. How happy are we supposed to be that the author of this anonymous email forward thought things over there were just peachy back in 2005?
I think a good chunk of the "skepticism and scorn" about reports like this derives from the blatant unreliability of reports like this. I mean, it's from 2005. Before the surge. Before the surge of violence that preceded the surge. The fact that war supporters continue to such old information (if it wasn't made up out of thin air even back then -- who knows?) this as currently relevant "good news" makes people like me, well, skeptical.

Re: Surprising facts about Iraq
Good news about Iraq!
Did you know Iraq has the highest population of unicorns per capita?
Did you know that approximately 170,000 Iraqis learned to breakdance in the year 2005?
Did you know that happiness weighs .02 ounces and thusly, the country of Iraq has actually sank into the sand 3 whole feet due to the extra weight since 2003?
Did you know that under Saddam, Iraq was scientifically less likely to have miracles performed within its borders?
Did you know that there is less sand and more apple pies in Iraq now than there was in 2002?
Did you know that 1 out of every 5 Iraqis reported dead loved ones coming back to life in 2006? This is compared with only 1 out of every 26 in 2001.
Did you know that all of these are TOTALLY true?!?!?!?!?

He's been pictured playing golf since then.
The New York Times reports (yes, I know, unlike conspiracy theory web sites and 3 year old emails, they are very unreliable, but anywho) that there is a huge increase in domestic violence, which tends to happen in unstable situations. Female illiteracy is 10 times higher than it was in the 1980s. Women have left schools and colleges and have left the work force in massive numbers due to the danger of being out and about. At least 40 women, and in two cases their children, were killed for violations of dress codes.
Some, however, may see all that as good news! Women are staying in their place!
At any rate, since the US invasion and occupation has been such a smashing success, and since it has lasted longer than US participation in World War II and US participation in the Korean War, can we now bring the successful victorious troops home?
BTW, who is covering flag burnings, Talkhard? And where on earth are they happening? Even in the Bay Area they are not happening.

Isn't that all the more reason for us to stay and try to protect their rights? It's clear the Shia are being supported by Iran, who would love nothing more than another friendly neighborhood theocracy to the west of them. For all of their imitation of National Socialism, the Baathists did have more of a Western outlook toward women. It seems if we get the political system we hope for in Iraq, women can be equal, safe and free.
