I've been there, but I might be wrong. It may have been Nevada, and it was all a hoax.
I swear I saw a platypus though.

Re: Obscure movie recommendations?
A couple of classic coming of age movies from Australia are "The Year My Voice Broke" (1987) and its sequel (notable for being the first movie of Nicole Kidman, Thandie Newton and Naomi Watts) "Flirting" (1991), both about the same character, played by Noah Taylor, who is a spitting image of Australia's greatest Goth Rock God, Nick Cave, who was the writer of the above-mentioned "The Proposition". Small country, eh?

Reading the wiki entry on it, that does sound like a good movie.

I re-watched Down By Law recently, and I forgot how SLOW it is. But Tom Waits is great, and Benigni is good in that, too.
Of recent Jarmusch: Broken Flowers was WAY overpraised, and Dead Man was unfairly criticized. Haven't seen Coffee and Cigarettes yet - anyone?

Re: Obscure movie recommendations?
Here's a movie that's hard to categorize (n the Blue Velvet "is the acting really supposed to be that bad? Is that bird SUPPOSED to look so fake?" mold): Vampire's Kiss. Nicholas Cage at his most wacked-out. My then-girlfriend and I recommended it to another friend, giving the impression it was hilarious, and he was positively angry at us the next time he saw us.
Two very entertaining, main-stream-but-low-budget movies:
Dog Soldiers - a great little werewolf movie
Mute Witness - a kind of trashy Hitchcock, if Hitchcock filmed in Russia to save money. (Actually, Hitchcock's Frenzy is perhaps nastier, and doesn't dissolve into shenanigans at the end.)

Another one of my faves. Ballroom dancing is such a great field to lampoon and Baz Luhrmann did it brilliantly.

Nice - it's my favorite of his Red Curtain Trilogy. I got to sit behind him during a pre-opening show of La Boheme when he had it on Broadway, and he was unreal - though noisy.

meru-
Benigni was great. My favorite is probably Giancarlo Esposito's bit in New York. Wynona is definitely the weak link in the film. Jarmusch films are slow usually, aren't they?
I enjoyed Broken Flowers but I really LOVE Night On Earth. I want to explore more of his films and I was thinking of starting with Down By Law, what do you think?
Also -- Fishing With John is funny if you can find it. John Lurie takes one of his friends (Jarmusch, Tom Waits, Willem Defoe, etc...) out for exotic fishing expeditions, only they know little, if anything, about fishing and it's narrated by a clueless, but official-sounding, narrator. Very very odd and funny. Most aptly described as "interesting people doing very boring things."
I think it only air on Japanese TV, but it's on the Critereon Collection now.

Re: Obscure movie recommendations?
I am watching an absolute beauty right now. It's called "Overnight" and it's the about a guy named Troy Duffy, who wrote "Boondock Saints" and is one of the biggest a-holes I've ever seen. It's on IFC tonight. Check it out if you can.
