Thoughts and prayers to Sen. Kennedy
I pretty much stand 180 degrees from all of his positions politically, but he's given his life in service to this country, so he has my respect.
I was saddened to hear that he may have suffered a stroke, as I couldn't think of anything worse. Now the news that his seizure was caused by a malignant brain tumor makes a stroke look like a walk in the park.
I wish he and his family nothing but the best. I hope a full recovery is possible.

Re: Thoughts and prayers to Sen. Kennedy
It is difficult for me to have any sympathy for Edward Kennedy.

Re: Thoughts and prayers to Sen. Kennedy
John McCain calls him the most effective member of the Senate. Most people with 45 years in the Senate have been doddering 95 year olds, but at 76 he was entering his peak of influence, if Obama becomes President. That's because Obama was greatly helped in the primaries by Kennedy's endorsement, and in appreciation would have listened to Kennedy's advice for the next 8 years. But it looks like Ted Kennedy won't be around. This won't add a Republican to the Senate, but it will subtract the most experienced Democrat, except for West Virginia's Byrd, who is underrated himself.

"Effective", like "great", is not always a good thing.
Still very sad news for him and his family.

Luckily for the Democratic Party, if Sen. Kennedy retires or passes the Governor of the Commonwealth (who is currently a Democrat) can appoint a new Senator for the rest of his term. Since he was re-elected in 2006, that person has four years to earn a reputation. I say "luckily" because it's not inconceivable for either Mitt Romney or Bill Weld to win Sen. Kennedy's seat when it comes up.

You sure about that? I read tonight that that used to be the law in MA, but in the last election cycle the legislature changed it (to a special election) to prevent Romney from replacing Kerry (had he been elected President) with a Republican.

No, I'm not. It's just the way it usually goes. If that's the case, I appreciate the correction.
