Re: Obama Smokes
People are looking at this the wrong way. His smoking isn't a liability; in fact he can use it to his political advantage by connecting himself with the last Great Communicator...

Well, smoking will increase his odds of ending up prematurely dead, so I guess that would help him make a connection with Reagan.

The most selfish and most stupid habit a human being can have, in my opinion, is people who are adidcted to drinking and then drive. That is truly more horrendous than smoking.
|
It it selfish for that sole reason. You are polluting the air that is shared by all. I despise smokers for that reason. Personally, my dad and eldest brother smoking inside the house triggered my asthma conditions. It is stupid because you are inhaling carcinogen laced SMOKE inside your body. Think about how logical that is.
Drinking is a habit. It is a form of intaking liquid into your body and in moderation, it is harmless for the most part. Driving WHILE INTOXICATED IS NOT a habit. The law prevents it from being a habit. See the difference?

Re: Obama Smokes
No, because the two are related. Drinking lowers inhibitions, which increases the chance to drive while intoxicated. So if you wanted to make it so the law prevented it from being a habit, you would prevent all drinking of alcohol or require all automobiles to have breathalyzers and you must pass it in order to unlock your car in any manner.
In regards to bars and restaurants, I guess if they don't have smoking/non-smoking areas it is selfish. If you go into a restaurant that has a smoking area, that's your fault, sorry. If they are smoking in non-smoking restaurants, then yes that is selfish and you have the right to complain to them and management if they do not stop.

Uh, okay. That's a little silly. Are you going to ask everyone to stop driving then? Because that's air pollution, and could probably be seen as a little selfish under this criteria. How about mills? Factories?
When people try to crucify smokers it always amuses me. So many people act like it is the worst possible addiction out there; all because some people are too lazy to cross the street because they are walking towards a guy on his break outside smoking for a few minutes.
However smoking, much like drinking, are so much more than habits. They're coping mechanisms.
Smoking, for the most part, you can avoid (unless you are a child, disabled or in a closed-in area) if you really want to do so. You may have to make some sacrifices (such as maybe not visiting your favorite bar because hey, it's a bar, and generally people smoke at bars), but at least a good majority of the time you can avoid what is causing you harm in regards to smoking. You don't get that choice when you're blindsided by someone who had too much to drink and decided to get in the car drunk.

Let me state this clearly again. Drinking while intoxicated IS NOT A HABIT. How could it be when the law of man and nature prohibits you from driving while intoxicated repeatedly? If you have not been killed from crashes, you will get jail time in ALL STATES for repeated DUI convictions. Drinking as a habit doesn't necessary lead to DUI automatically. Matter of fact, one could have a habit of drinking WITHOUT being intoxicated. All in moderation. You are grasping at straws.
hab·it ( hăb'ĭt)
n.- A recurrent, often unconscious pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition.
- An established disposition of the mind or character.

Re: Obama Smokes
My mother died from lung cancer and I still dont have that big of a grudge against smoking. I only smoke the green, but smoking cigs is a personal choice that adults should be free to make.
I dont see it as any sort of blemish of character.

Re: Obama Smokes
I think smoking cigarettes is disgusting.
But in no way would that ever affect my vote. Not just in this election, but in any.
I smoke cigars every once in a while. I think every President smokes cigars. It's not filled with nicotine, but it's just as bad for you, just as bad for everyone around you... Yet it's more socially acceptable.

I had to re-read this. I've lived in Seattle long enough now that I forgot indoor smoking in public is still allowed in some places. Hah.

Oregon finally gets with the program next year... looking forward to it.
While I hate being stuck in an inclosed space with a smoker, this won't influence my vote. But whether he wins the election or not, heres hoping that Obama is able to win this particular battle.

Me, too. I'm not a fan of his politics, but I wish him only the best.
I do wonder though, how many carbon credits would he have to buy to support his habit?
