If you read the whole thread, as well as my other comments on the subject, you'll see that I'm not basing my argument on a single isolated case. I do recall seeing TV footage of people in New Orleans looting the local WalMart, with the police right there in the middle of it, grabbing things off the shelves. And I do recall hearing that many people in New Orleans refused to leave their homes, even though they were warned to. These are not "isolated cases," but well-known facts.

Just compare the videos shown on the news. Or the police reports. Or ask the charities in the areas.
Years later, NO residents are still whining, crying, accusing and using.
It was a tragedy, albeit one they could and should have avoided, but a tragedy just the same.
Their leaders let them down and their neighbors turned their backs.
I suggest they get over it, vote for new leaders, move to higher ground and be better neighbors.
Wallowing in self-pity is nonproductive.

I see people who moved to the city as ambitious poeple who want to make more out of their life. Who want to expose themselves to different cultures and different ideas and surround themselves in an environment where there is no ceiling. Who dare to leave their comfort zone and challenge themselves in ways that allows them to reach their potential without being dragged down by what neighbors and society tell them is right but rather think independently to decide what is right and wrong.

I don't mean this to be a callout, so please don't take it that way, but did anyone else notice that It's_GO_Time lists his location as Beaverton? Hey, I live in LO and a gentrified part of Denver, so I'm in no position to talk. I just thought the juxtaposition was funny.

Fair enough assessment if you are going by what you saw on TV, however I am not convinced that media portrayals of either incident are accurate or unbiased enough to make the type of blanket statements that are being made here.

There's also no footage of white people "finding food to survive" and black people "looting".

Uh, huh. Those cops in New Orleans who were pulling pants and shirts off the shelves at Walmart were just trying to "survive." Same goes for all the kids who were taking toys out of the store.

Interesting..the top are of blacks, and the bottom one is of two white people.
Was there looting? you bet. Were the white people looting in that picture? I don't see how they weren't doing anything different than the others.
I don't see how anyone in good conscience would actually try to politicize the aftermath of the flooding and hurricane in the manner you're trying to. I can't say I'm surprised you did though.

Anyone else notice that maxiep thinks Beaverton is "rural" . . . I think that is what he is implying . . .

No, I was implying that Beaverton (like LO) is a milquetoast suburb. Like I said, it wasn't a callout, I just found your post about big cities (and I include the MSA as part of the city) and what I know about Beaverton to be somewhat disconnected. I just thought it was funny, and I wasn't laughing at you. Please take my initial post in the good humor in which it was meant.

No hard feeling (repped you as a symbolic gesture) . . . I was just confused because I thought you were implying that Beaverton was a rural area.
I hope you know that my post about rural and urban populations was a joke. I don't feel that way at all but was surprised Maris had such strong stereotype feeling about the two groups . . . so I thought I would throw some "big city" stereotypes of rural areas right back at him . . . but I guess he didn't feel like swinging at my pitch . . . those baseball types, always waiting for the perfect pitch.

I completely missed the point of your original post. Now that I read it in the vein you meant it, it's pretty damn funny!
EDIT: I tried to rep you back, but I have to spread some more points around. Does anyone want rep points from a "hate-monger" like me so I can rep IGT?

Sure, my ego's feeling a little bit anemic today. A nice non-earned rep might help.
