Welcome Russell,
I'm not too far off...I'm studying a species of introduced ant in New Zealand. And they're actually from Queensland, so they're your local guys (well, gals). While I'm here I've got to support the Tall Blacks...too bad they got pounded by your Boomers this week!
Glad you'll be pulling for the Blazers from down under.

Right now, I'm putting the cake in the oven, I'm about to bake it, and in two years I'm going to pull it out and I'm going to see how the cake turns out.
And at that point in time, I'm going to go, 'I want chocolate icing ... no, I want this kind of icing ... no, no, I want this kind of icing.'
And that's when its going to be special. That's when you have a special cake."

Welcome mate!
Our local soccer team Portland Timbers is one of the best supported sides in North America and will likely go MLS in 2-3 years, you might consider that band wagon too You may like the colors:

Our manager (Gavin Wilkinson) is a Kiwi though. The Timbers really could use a D-Mid!
The Mathildas played a match in our stadium when the Women's World Cup had a few matches in Portland.
When I visited Australia in 2002 I saw 2 AFL matches, 1 Rubgy League, a match between Australia and France rugby national teams, and I saw South Melbourne FC beat Brizzy in an NSL Playoff match.
I met a bus driver who's son played baseball for SA's state team.
Aussies are sports mad!
Go Blazers!

thanks baracuda
my son, jacob, would look good as d-mid in those colours. he has a few skills that cannot be teached- a wonderful sense of timing in a tackle and great weight on a chip pass to his strikers.
we watched senna closely on the tv for spain in the euro, he has picked up some positional tips from that.
we are sports mad, i'm yet to meet a sport that i don't like!
even in our Church outreach, we try to attract people thru sport, i head up that ministry.
rugby league and AFL fight it out as the major winter sports, AFL is the better sport to watch live but is crap on TV. Rugby League is the opposite, so we are starting a home group around watching a double header of rugby league at someone's house, for families. the fathers , sons, and others interested settle around the tv at game time with a study and dinner timed either before or after. other family members with like interests are catered for at the same time.

Newberg is about 25 miles (39 km) from Portland. Salem is about 45 miles (74 km) from Portland.
Oregon is a little larger (251,419 sq km) than the Australian state of Victoria (227,600 sq km).
