Re: short Iraqi movie about life in Baghdad
The very last line of the 3rd video is, I think, dead on. That was something I was trying to get across in the Bush is a fiscal nightmare thread before it got closed. Thanks for posting these, very insightful.

haha - funny hasoos. anyone can 'talkhard' when they aren't the ones killing children and women for no apparent reason. easy to support homicidal maniac military tactics from 10,000 miles away.

Yep, I'm sure things aren't great there. Things were better in Berlin and Tokyo in the 1930s compared to the mid-1940s as well. Long term, however, getting rid of the Baathists and ensuring that the state doesn't become a repressive theocracy will be the best thing to happen to the Iraqis.

When in doubt, compare the armed conflict the US is involved in with WW2.

Compare it to the liberation of a country from any totalitarian dictator, I don't care. Would the people of South Korea be better off as part of a unified Korea under Kim Jong Il? More lives were lost as part of that conflict than during the Iraqi war, but my guess would be the South is pretty happy we intervened.

You rely upon guesses. My guess is that the relatives of the dead aren't at all happy about the deaths. Massive deaths on behalf of an abstract principle of yours doesn't cut it with the victims, their loved ones, and anyone who can feel human empathy.

Yay for feelings! I love this line of argument. When faced with the good of the many, the response is to bring up a single case and call the other party heartless and unfeeling. Those abstract statistics are people too, they're just not shown crying on TV. You keep watching 60 Minutes!
