Not really analogous: McCain actually IS old. The idea that Obama is just a "celebrity" is an invention of McCain's neo-Swift-Boaters.

Really? Before he ran, what important legislation did he champion? He gave a terrific speech at the Democratic convention and he's "bright, articulate and clean".

"The end justifies the means"? That is a dangerous road to go down. It would mean that you would support the tactic of those idiots trying to paint Obama as a radical Muslim just to keep him out of the Oval Office.

As for using his appeal, keep your eye on the ball. This issue isn't about appeal, it's about strategy. Think about the biggest criticisms about him and then think about everything the fashion industry represents. It just goes to reinforce exactly what his critics say.
I am still baffled as to how Obama using popular designers to make memorabilia is somehow dangerous to his campaign. Seriously, do you think those rushbelt voters you talk about that care about that? Heck do you think most people going to vote in November care about that such?

This isn't about McCain. Please don't paint me as a McCain supporter. I happen to dislike both candidates.
Ah yes the 'I dislike Mccain line'. Balian also uses that one too. Too bad you guys dont start threads criticizing Mccain, or argue against Mccain as much as you do Obama. Kinda weird considering you claim you dislike him.

It tells me something more. You could live in Ted Kysinski's cabin in Montana and be saturated with Obamamania. It's all Obama all the time. McCain is invisible and people are voting for the Invisible Man before the Messiah.

And don't confuse the popular vote with the Electoral College. If they were one in the same, we'd be talking about President Gore's response to 9/11. It doesn't matter how much Obama wins California or New York by; it matters whether or not he gets a majority in Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Florida.
Which is why once people start hearing about Mccain, and his vision for the country, they will get a better understanding of how similar he is going to be to Bush. There's too much Obama out there, and the Mccain camp likes it that way. Thats why they would rather talk about Obama THAN Mccain.

And yes I understand the workings of the electoral vote, which is why state by state polls are more important than the popularity votes Gallup and co. trudge out daily.

Re: You can't make this stuff up

watching McCain's commercials are just comical. McCain "The original Maverick, fighting and pioneering change these last four years against the tobacco industry and...".

Not only was it cheesy, but he's still fighting the tobacco companies? Seems like that was handled decently well a while ago. Man, if Obama doesn't win then I don't know what to think about Americans anymore.

I've already pegged Denmark as my landing spot if the US really goes to crap in the future.

I guess you're just going to have to stay baffled if you can't see how this strategy is a bad one. As for the "rushbelt" voters, I don't know how many people own belts made by the band Rush, so that's probably not an important constituency. However, for rust belt voters, this kind of stuff resonates. One of the reasons Obama was whalloped by Hillary in the primaries in those states is that they didn't feel he understood them. Cozying up to 6th Avenue and SoHo just reinforces those biases.

Ah, yes. If you don't make up threads criticizing both equally, you must not really dislike the other candidate. I was a Giuliani guy. How much in common do McCain and Giuliani share? They have more in common than Giuliani and Obama, but other than that not much. McCain is another Big Government type. Great. A choice between Big Government and Bigger Government. Thank you for accusing me of being disingenuous, though.

The problem is that McCain has run for President before. He's also been in the Senate since 1984. People know who he is. People know his story. He needs less of introduction than Senator Obama, who is still a mystery.

As for being like President Bush, this is going to come as a surprise, but there are aspects of the job President Bush has done that people like. I was actually called by Gallup and I was counted as one who "disapproved" of his job performance. Why? Not because of the War on Terror, where he has done an excellent job. It's because he's allowed government to grow too much.

If you did understand the Electoral College, why did you bring up a meaningless percentage point lead, knowing the election is going to be decided in a handful of states? If McCain carries Michigan, Ohio and Florida, it's game over, regardless if Obama carries Virginia, Colorado, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

As for me, I expect Obama to win the popular vote by an even larger margin than did Vice President Gore. Does he win the Electoral vote? That's another matter. And if another Republican loses the popular vote but wins the White House, there's going to be a riot across this country by those on the Left who believe this election is already over.
