My view on how to best build a team has been the same for a while now... certainly a long time before last Tuesday.
Every now and then you hear someone complaining about how today's players can't shoot. The main reason for this (IMO) is because it's getting harder and harder to even get a good shot off. With the increasing size and athletism of players at all positions, and the court dimensions staying the same, defenses can effectively take up space like never before. A team with multiple shotblockers and long athletic wings can cut down angles and deny opprotunities leaving offenses to settle for low percentage shots like long jumpers off the dribble. Portland already has two of those types of guys in Miles and Ratliff, I'd like to add more.
I've been for building the team around those sort of space eaters since before Drexler made Paxson expendable. But there is room enough in my view of hoops to include Zach... I'd like to have him on the team getting 30 minutes working the boards and getting high percentage putbacks. I just don't want to see him as THE featured player that the team ties it's future to. He is effective IMO, but I think lack of D is why his +/- rated him as the 110th best player in the league. Also I don't see the Magic as likely to trade with Portland as the Blazers don't have the sorts of players available that they'd be likely to want, and like I said before, EO is probably going #1.
