Just throwin' this out there
Since Kupchek has said that they will work their hardest on keeping Kobe, does that make Shaq the odd man out? Kupchek even says on ESPN that Shaq may demand a trade if they keep Kobe, so....
Would you trade Ratliff, SAR and Zach for Shaq?
Fire away!

hmm the best blocking center in the game, a known 20-10 guy in rahim, and a future superstar for a 30-something Center who prolly would retire in 2 years and wouldnt want to be in Portland anyways. I'll Pass, minaly b/c it included Zach and I can't stand the diesal.

I might go something like this....
Portland trades:
SF Darius Miles (10.9 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.0 apg in 26.3 minutes)
C Dale Davis (4.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.0 apg in 22.1 minutes)
PF Shareef Abdur-Rahim (16.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 2.0 apg in 31.6 minutes)
Portland receives:
C Shaquille O'Neal (21.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 2.9 apg in 36.8 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -10.1 ppg, -5.7 rpg, and -2.1 apg.
TRADE ACCEPTED
But then again, Shaq would get bored here and that is a lot to give up for a player that might not resign with Portland after the contract expires.

What am I thinking? I would have to say no, unless Portland was poised for a Championship run, which they are not. Nope, I want to pass on the idea of Shaq in a Blazer uniform.

There are very few players in the NBA who would effectively end my being a Blazer fan by being traded here.
1.) Kobe Bryant
2.) Shaq
3.) Karl Malone
And actually, I think that's it.
For me to come around and support Shaq in a Blazer uniform, there are a few things he'd have to do.
#1 - he'd have to demand a trade to Portland and profess that he always loved playing here as a Laker,
#2 - he would have to say his goal was to bring a championship to the classiest NBA city and the best fan base in the US,
#3 - he'd agree to a pay cut,
#4 - after taking the cut in pay, he'd donate half of what remained of his first year's salary to Oregon's schools,
#5 - he'd donate half his second year's salary to clean up the Willamette River,
#6 - he'd promise to re-sign with Portland, at a reduced rate,
#7 - he'd enter training camp at 330 pounds,
#8 - he'd re-hire the guru who helped him hit free throws back in 2001, and get his percentage above 70%,
#9 - he'd recruit free agents by personally visiting them during his summers off,
and #10 - he'd take back all the lousy things he ever said about Arvydas Sabonis.
If Shaq promised to do these things, and then followed through on them, I could probably deal with seeing him suiting up for our Trail Blazers. But just barely.
I was going to say he ought to buy me a car, but I figured that'd be pushing it.

You know the Tim Duncan commercial where he's negotiating with the car salesman? If Shaq promised all these listed things, I'd hope Nash would still be giving him the ice glare and hold out for much more... some sort of Blazer fan dunk tank would be a nice addition to that list.
As hard as it would be to stay on board if Shaq became a Blazer, I can't imagine what it would take for me to not take a sabatical as a Blazer fan if Kobe or Karl were signed. It's about as likely to happen as me moving to the middle east, so whatever... but no way/no how could I root for those smug bleeps.

Wouldn't that be irony.
Shaq playing on the team that invented Hack a Shaq.
Or should I say, Shaq shooting foul shots for the team that invented Hack a Shaq.

Adding Shaq for almost any price would make us instant contenders. Shaq is that good.
I can understand why people wouldn't want to root for him, but if we acquired him I think the team would get a LOT better in the short run and it would be in danger of being much worse 2 or 3 years from now.

But would it really be much better?
Let's say we traded Theo, SAR, and Zach in the deal. That leaves us with a line-up of Shaq, DD, Darius, DA, and Damon. Would a team with 1 star, 3 below average starters, and a weak bench, really have a chance to get past the 1st round?
Shaq would have to play 80 games (something he hasn't done in awhile) and average around 50PPG (something that might be impossible without the Laker refs) just for the team to make the play-offs.
With DA bricking shots and Damon refusing to feed the post, we would be lucky if Shaq didn't retire at the all-star break!

Interesting question.
First of all, giving up both SAR and Zach is about the worst thing for Portland to do in a trade to acquire Shaq, but even in that situation, we'd be better in the near term.
Secondly, it wouldn't be a team with a star and some other players; it would be a team with a top 3 player in the NBA and some other players.
Finally, those other players wouldn't be as bad as, say, the Magic were last year when McGrady and Co. struggled so badly. Add a full MLE player to the mix and sign a couple of veterans relatively cheaply who'd want to play with Shaq and I think the team would be pretty darn good.
Losing both ZR and SAR to get Shaq might be too much to allow us to contend next year, but we'd still be better and if we got to keep SAR to go along with Shaq I think we'd be a top 4 team in the West.

I understand how people could not like Shaq, but an opportunity to get arguably the best center of all time for 3 guys who have never won a playoff series seems like a no brainer. Even though Shaq misses some games, he comes to play in the playoffs. The way I was lookiing at it, giving up on Zach to get Shaq isn't a bad tradeoff, especially if Damon and Dale were allowed to walk after next year and we could pursue a free agent or two. I would thnk there would be players out there who would want to play with the big man.
