DraftCity: Telfair underrated
Link
Quote:
The issue on Telfair's height is being severely overrated. While people can question his defensive impact, Telfair was not expected to be a defensive stopper in the NBA. He's an offensive player, both in terms of passing and scoring, and his height will not affect that. His height is not going to affect his passing skills on the next level because he does not use his height predominantly for passing, he uses his basketball IQ. His height is not going to hurt his ability to penetrate. His height isn't even going to hurt his ability to get his shot off since he has a quick release and nice form on his jumper. His height does hurt, no doubt about that. If he was a bit taller he would be a much higher ranked player, but don't make it out to be more than it is.
Shooting, or lack thereof. This is the argument I hate the most. Why do people get on Telfair for his jump shot when his is as good as half of the perimeter players in the first round? He's not consistent? Well, neither are Livingston, Snyder, Iggy, Josh Smith, JR Smith, Dorell Wright, and many more first round talents. In fact, Telfair has shown range and consistency at the high school level, shooting a very good 45% from 3 point range along with 53% from the floor (consistency should be the issue at the next level, not questioned at his current level). He has shown that he has amazing form on his jumper. And he has shown that he is a workaholic who strives to improve at his game.

That statement reminds me a lot of a certain Stephon Marbury, who had great form early on but hadn't really fine tuned the range. He turned out ok.

Man, those FG%'s really shocked me.
45% from the 3 point line is very good. This is the same 3 point line that Kirk Snyder is shooting 31% from.
I would not be totally against drafting him at 13. But it would be awesome if we could get him at 22.

anyone have the # of 3 pointers he's taken and missed?
I mean, 45% can be deceptive. Especially considering one of the complaints about his game is his inconistent shooting. And if 45% from 3's is inconsistent, it must either mean he's taken very few 3 pointers and mostly layups, or they have a weird definition for inconsistent.
One could be 9-20 from 3's and it' 45%.

I don't think that they mean he was particularly inconsistent in HS - if so, maybe they mean streaky.
I think the knock was that he wasn't shooting lights out in all of his workouts... sometimes hitting a lot, sometimes not. But who was hailed as consistent besides Jackson or Smith?
If inconsistent is 53% and 45%... whatever, I'll take it.

Nash said that Telfair was a good shooter. Who said that he's inconsistent?

That's a very good question. What's the actual source of the knock on his shooting? All I've seen is people repeating each other's "inconsistent shooter" comment, with no one giving supporting evidence. The stats indicate he's a pretty darn good shooter. I'll side with the stats in lieu of any counter-argument of substance.
