Hassell or... ?
I saw a post here in "the trade" thread that said the Blazers have offered their MLE to Trenton Hassell and that the Wolves are now on the clock to match it. A couple of questions about that:
1. How long do the Wolves have to match our offer to Hassell?
2. If they do match, what position does that leave them in WRT to any other FA's they may have that we might be interested in?

Ya know if Portland made the trade AND signed Hassell I am thouroughly confused.
That adds too many players to the backcourt unless they truely want to let Telfair wait out a season, which is possible, unless they are banking on NVE sitting out or retiring.

All I have seen is that it has been offered. IF Hassell accepts, the Wolves would have 15 days to match. I've got to believe they would match that. Like we're doing with Miles, the Wolves are letting Hassell set his value. At this point, it seems like he's either going to Minnesota or here because Denver doesn't have the cash...

Guys, Van Exel will probably not be here the year after next. He may not even play here at all next year. Stay tuned.

This isn't about Van Exel. This is about Hassell. I'd really like to see the Blazers pick him up and want to know how long the Wolves have to match our offer, and what other Wolves the Blazers might be looking at if they can force Minny's hand on Hassell.

I agree the thread definitely is (and should be) focused on Hassell, but since Portland just added NVE I think that Schilly's comment is a good one.
Does it make sense to add Trenton now that we've added NVE? Assuming we HAVE offered Hassell and contract, and assuming the Wolves do NOT match, our roster would look something like this:
PG: Damon, NVE
SG: DA, Hassell
SF: Miles, Patterson
PF: Zach, SAR
C: Theo, Vlad
With Qyntel, Telfair, Outlaw, and Khyrapa as probable adds to the roster (putting us up to 14), and Frahm, Rice, Ha, Monia, and Nedzad probably on the outside looking in (cut or overseas).
Not a lot of size. Only Theo and Vlad are over 6'9".
Portland should have added Chris Andersen, but he signed a deal with NO.

I guess a backcourt of Damon, DA, Hassell, NVE and Telfair DOES look crowded after we put up with Damon, DA, Gill, and Dickau last season. Frahm is non-guaranteed so who knows about him - he's nobody I would count on.

I didn't notice anyone post this today so it may have slipped through the cracks. From today's Rocky Mountain News:
Quote:
HASSELL BLAZER-BOUND? If a report out of Minnesota is true, Timberwolves guard Trenton Hassell is in line for a monster raise and a possible climate change.
Citing "insiders," a St. Paul Pioneer Press columnist wrote Tuesday the Portland Trail Blazers have made the restricted free agent a four-year, $16 million contract offer.
Such an offer might put an end to Denver's chances of landing Hassell. Unless they make a trade, the Nuggets can offer Hassell only a starting salary of $2.3 million.
Although Minnesota can match any offer for Hassell, the Timberwolves reportedly do not want to pay much more than Denver's $2.3 million ceiling.
Hassell's agent, Mark Bartelstein, would not comment on the report, but he said he still is in discussions with "a bunch of people," including the Nuggets.
Vandeweghe said he had nothing new to report in his search for a shooting guard or swingman.
|
Maybe this report is unfounded, but I had previously assumed that Minnesota would likely match anything below a max-MLE-type deal. I don't think 4 years and 16 million would be too outrageous for a great defender with a developing offensive game; it would almost be a bargain at today's rates. Stay tuned...

At 12.5% raises, he only starts out at $3.3 mil or so.
We are already at $75 mil after yesterday. Higher than last year I think
I still think there is a multiple player trade going to go down soon

Thanks for the update, Leroy. Like I said, I'd like Hassell on the Blazers regardless of NVE being here this season. You just don't find great defensive and rebounding SG's very often.
But I'm also aware that signing Hassell to that kind of deal (~$4M/year) nearly puts him in contention with DA for the starting SG gig and pretty much locks NVE into backing Damon up at the point (which may not be a bad thing - can you imagine the Blazers playing both Damon at PG and NVE at SG at the same time?). If the Blazers do this, I would expect them to try to move DA this summer.

My guess so far
PG: Damon, NVE, Telfair
SG: DA, Monia, Woods
SF: Miles, Patterson, Khyrapa
PF: Zach, SAR, Outlaw
C: Theo, Vlad, Sinonovic
CUT: Frahm, Rice
Overseas: Ha
