Snow listed Portland as one of the teams he would like to go before trade

if his contract was shorter I would take him , but he has a long term deal

But then an NBA insider called and told me that Philadelphia 76ers guard Eric Snow was a better fit, and was the first choice of some key people in the Blazers' organization. Snow, 6-foot-3, has two healthy knees. On Tuesday, Snow was traded to Cleveland for Kevin Ollie and Kedrick Brown.

Looks like the interest was somewhat mutual.

Maybe Philadelphia was saying "Screw Portland" for not letting them talk to Cheeks. I bet that had a lot to do with Snow not coming to Portland.
Plus I think that Nash sees NVE playing both the one and two, kinda like a more expensive Brent Barry kind of player.

The frustrating thing is that a Damon-Snow back court matches up better with a "standard" 1-2 combo than NVE-Damon... at least Snow has a chance of guarding 2 guards.
Ah, well.

maybe Portland didn't want to take on his contract, which is much longer...and for a player who's really not going to get any better..
An improvement? Sure.

The contract angle is really the only explanation... but I don't find that explanation very satisfactory. Snow gives the Blazers a better chance to win this season (because he fits better with DA and Damon) and he's a better character guy than NVE.
You know I don't really care about "character" of players too much, but it seems hypocritical to me that the Blazers make a pledge and make trades to get rid of bad apples and then they go and trade for one.
Snow has a contract that runs through 2008-09, so it's long, but it maxes out at 7.3m in the final year, so it's not terribly large (he makes a couple million more over 5 years than DA does over the next 3).
Unless Portland has something better on their mind than "clear space for next summer" I think trading for NVE rather than Snow was a BIG mistake.

Y'know, I'd love to know what Mo Cheeks REALLY thinks about getting Van Exel over Snow.
This has really pissed me off. I wouldn't mind the Van Exel trade I guess (we did need depth at guard) if Snow hadn't been available, but he was. And wouldn't it have been nice to get a little stability? I actually LIKE the fact that Snow has a long deal (because, as Ed says, it's very reasonable) because we could settle down and get used to him being here. Why bother rooting for players if they're just rented for a year? And I bet Van Exel's going to want to know if the team's picking up his option for the following year, and when it's clear there's no chance, he will NOT be happy.
If we were one player away from contending, then Van Exel makes more sense. Given we'll be VERY lucky to make the playoffs, and we'll be struggling to stay ahead of the team Van Exel just left, it makes a lot less sense.
I guess I feel glad for Cleveland after Boozergate.

I agree too, Ed O.
Snow make much more sense to this Portland team, and ones in the future. Both Van Exel and Snow have had injury problems in the past, so it can't be that they were scared away by Snow because of that.
I suppose it's possible that Philly didn't want to deal with Portland due to past happenings, or they didn't want what Portland would offer them.
I'm puzzled. I'll await judgement until the dust settles, but as of right now, I'm not pleased.

On the other hand, if he has an interest in playing beyond this season, it behooves him to have a fairly good season, if he wants a good contract from someone next season.
If he grouses and does nothing, I doubt anyone will pony up a nice new deal for him.

How many time have you heard Snow for the three and the Sixers win?
I can name 30 or 40 times I've heard that in regards to Van.
Van must be here to take over at the #2. DA might be the one on the way out.

I think that's a pretty tremendous overstatement.
He's only played in 826 games in his career. You're saying he's won over 3% of them by hitting three-pointers?

It seems that you hear it usually 3 or 4 times a season, at least 2 times a season...so after 10 seasons in the NBA you gotta think his numbers are in the 20-30 range no doubt.

We already have a 2 guard who can't hit the three. Snow has hit only 41 in his entire career (2-18 last season). How is that an improvement over DA?

Snow is not the scorer we need. Nice D though.
