There seemed to be three primary issues with Patterson and the Sonics when he came to Portland:
1. PR issues. The Sonics were talking big about having "nice guys" and basically actively avoiding the Whitsitt path (winning over other stuff). They Sonics have done a lot of losing since Patterson left, and Ruben's been out of trouble as a Blazer, so it's possible that they'd be willing to look past his past.
2. Gary Payton. RP and Payton reportedly just didn't get along. Payton's obviously gone now (hanging out with another guy that didn't like Patterson in Kobe), so this wouldn't be a roadblock.
3. Money. For all of the Sonics' concerns about 1 and 2, if Patterson were available to re-sign cheaply as a FA, I think they would have kept him. Portland and Cleveland both were offering max MLE deals, though, which let the Sonics take the high road, rather than admit they didn't want to spend that many Starbucks on RP. Ruben's obviously making more per year now than his first year with Portland, but the relative brevity of the contract at this point might prove to be enough of a difference for the Sonics to roll the dice.
If Patterson were a good fit on the floor for the Sonics, I think that they'd be willing to move him (especially if they were able to get out from under Booth and his salary).
The thing is that Ruben's NOT a good fit. Lewis and Radmanovich are both SFs and while neither is nearly the defender RP is, they'll be using up all 48 minutes at the position and that would have meant Patterson and his big contract would rot on the bench.
A long-winded way of saying: I don't think the Sonics would have been interested.
