If Payton wants out so bad and has hinted that he'd play for Portland, why not send them someone else? Either Boston loses GP for nothing or they get someone in return and Nash would be dumb to trade SAR for him... "Paging Mr. Stoudamire..."

I agree... Payton wants OUT or threatens to retire.. advantage any other team but Boston...
they will get nothing for him by him retiring... so they need to save face and get something
just throwing ou some starting ideas... may need some tweaking
TRADE #1
Boston sends Payton $5.41 mil + Welsch $1.42 mil = $6.83 mil
Portland sends Ruben $5.8 mil + $0.87 trade kicker + Woods $1.2 mil = $7.87 mil
barely works CBA wise. Bostom gets Mr Hustle and potential
or
TRADE #2
Boston sends Payton $5.41 mil + Welsch $1.42 mil + Perkins $0.73 mil = $7.56 mil
Portland trades DA $8.4 mil
I like #2 although we have plenty of old guards
PG Stoudamire, Payton, Telfair
SG NVE, Welsch, Woods
SF Miles, Patterson, *Khryapa
PF Randolph, Rahim, Outlaw
C Ratliff, Perkins, *Stepania
*Reserves
Overseas Ha, Sinonovic, Monia
Frahm waived by Sept 1

I like where you're going with that, T Bob, I'm just not sure if Boston is ready to give up on a guy like Welsh or even Davis and get so little in return. I like what Rube brings to the floor, but I think his iffy past and contract status makes Boston shy away from these deals even more. They're sure in a bind with GP and his small contract, they're either going to have to take back very little talent, someone with a lot of potential (unlikely) or package him with on of their heavier contracts (Lafrentz). Without SAR or any other one of our capable bigs, any deal involving Portland wouldn't benefit them very much. However, Danny Ainge has surprised us more than once...

I know it is popular to bash Payton and call him washed up but here are the facts.
I would expect 15 - 20 points per game. Last year he went for 14.6 on a Lakers team that he did not fit into with 2 guys taking most the shots. The prior 11 seasons Payton averaged at or near 20 points per game. I see no reason to expect less than 15 points per game from him and he is very capable of getting 20 per game.
I would expect him to get 5 - 8 assists per game. Last year he got 5.5. The prior 11 seasons he averaged 7 - 9 assists per game.
Payton is still one of the best points in the game. He is durable and consistent. He gets steals and he doesn't turn the ball over (last year he was 8th in the NBA in assist to turnover ratio at about 3:1). He has had attitude problems and he had a bad champoinship series. But he is still a future hall of famer with plenty of basketball left.

jackie....Gary ain't washed up. It was the triangle that was screwing him up, he is a guy that needs the ball in his hands to dominate, and he didn't have that with the triangle. I can see him going for about 16-18ppg and 7-9apg next season with Pierce. There could be one problem though...Pierce needs the ball in his hands too. BUT the good thing is Payton is a good slasher, and all he has to do is drive and dish to PP for the tre. Pierce's assist numbers should go up too.

Some of these trades proposed by Blazer fans are very unrealistic.
Boston management says that they expect Gary Payton to report to training camp. I believe that they will call his bluff of retirement. GP has everything to lose by retiring and he knows it. He gets a year older and the terrible playoff series that he had lives on for another year. He has been working hard this off season and is ready to prove that the playoffs were a fluke.
He is upset with the Lakers. But he is under contract.
If I were Boston I would call his bluff. If he does not report fine him. If he retires... so what. I certainly wouldn't make horrible deals and give up Welsh or Davis for nothing just to get rid of Payton. Boston does not want Woods, Patterson, or Nick Van Excel. The only way something like that would occur is if Raef was part of the deal. But really I do not see Boston trading Lafrentz when his value is so low and I do not see any other team taking him unless the deal was outstanding.
The SAR / Payton deal is probably just a rumor but at least it makes sense with some expiring contracts and draft picks.
