unless they're doing the trade in 2 months, no trade with SAR and Payton can be done.

Reasons why this trade rumor is bullcrap:
1) That's not equal value for SAR. Not by a long shot. Payton is a broken-down old never-was, and last year proved he's got nothing left.
2) What the hell would the Blazers want with ANOTHER Point Guard? Currently they have Van Exel, Stoudamire, and Telfair all jockying for playing time, and you are going to add PAYTON???? Insanity!
3) Payton's history is full of whining, bickering, and making a general *** of himself in the clubhouse. He's a lockerroom cancer. He would spend the entire year *****ing to the press about his lack of playing time, Zach's selfishness on offense, blah blah blah blah. Don't need it.
Payton screwed himself last year when he went to the Lakers. The price he will pay will be the rest of his career.

I can see why the Celtics would want to do this.
I can see why Goodwin would like to engineer a trade for his unhappy players.
But, for the life of me, I can't see why the Blazers would want to make this trade.
Payton and SAR are about $9 mil apart in salary. No way that we're taking on Rafe's bloated contract. About the best deal I could see would be adding Stewart (final year) and Fox (retiring) plus a pick. I guess it would clear cap space for next season, but why bother?

replacing never-was with HOF'er would be more accurate. Sure he's fading from his former greatness, seemingly moving a full gear slower than he used to, but thats no reason to degrade his former abilities.
btw, no way on this trade for several reasons already mentioned... people are just going to have get used to the idea that this Blazer roster is probably just a Miles signing from being set to start the season, with any player movement coming at the mid-season trade deadline when the value of the expiring deals they have to move are at their highest. Right now teams are trying to sell their season ticket plans, and trading for an expiring deal probably sends the wrong message about their 2004-5 chances. At the deadline the ticket plans will be sold, and for several teams the writing will be on the wall as far as their chances... maybe they'll feel they're just a quality 4 away from a championship, maybe they'll want to clear capspace and start over, but IMO that will be the time that Nash finally makes some moves

How about SAR, the Mouse, and a resigned Miles for a Payton/Pierce/trash package?
How much is that in expiring contracts anyway?

How about we just trade SAR, Patterson and Derek Anderson for Rick Fox(Expiring), Yogi Stewart(Expiring), Jiri Welsch, Ricky Davis and Raef LaFrentz.
PG- Damon/NVE/Telfair
SG- Ricky/Jiri/Frahm
SF- Miles/Jiri/Woods
PF- Zach/Raef
C- Theo/Raef

I brought up a trade idea earlier this week with Payton and SAR being involved. If Nash really doesn't want long contracts back, he could trade SAR for Payton, Stewart, Rick Fox and Bostons two first round picks. They own Philly's pick. Rick Fox is suppose to retire so we wouldn't see his sorry butt, Stewart and Payton are in the last year of their contract. Also Payton can guard most SG at least OK and Damon and NVE play better as scoring guards. With this trade Nash still gets his cap space, but adds two future 1st round picks he can keep or trade. Why not do that, if you are going to let SAR walk at the end of the season?

SAR to Boston for Payton
Here is the latest rumor:
http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_9424.shtml
I am a Celtic fan who lives in the Portland area so I have strong feelings on this trade.
What do you think?
Seems like Rahim plays on a losing team no matter where he goes. He is unhappy. He may leave at the end of the year for nothing.
Payton had a bad playoff series against Detroit. However, he is hungry, he is still capable of putting up 15 - 20 points and 5 - 8 assists. Paired with some of the young talent on the Blazers he might excel.
How would other Oregonians feel about bringing Gary back to his college home state?

No. Payton burned Portland last year for the Lakers (our hated rival) And we are 3 deep at the PG spot anyways. On top of that, even if we weren't so deep at the 1, Payton is not enough for Rahim.
