Let me start off saying I haven't lived in NY or LA, but I've heard the media there is very hard on pro athletes. But I wonder if the same can't be said for Portland media, and if this could contribute to free agents not wanting to play here.
For example, the Q. Woods story is getting tons of attention, and the clips I've heard have been very critical of him, deservedly so, but it just feels like he's the next in a line of players to be beat up by the media. If this story is true, and as far as I know it hasn't been proven yet, that's one thing. But if not, the damage has been done. Qyntel made an effort to make changes in his life this summer by going to drug rehab, working out and his teammates and coaches say they've noticed a change. But he doesn't get a chance here because he gets crucified for something that's not been proven yet, and his past mistakes get rehashed in the media. Then for the casual Blazer fan, all they hear is local media again expressing how this team is full of players who are bad for the league and this city in particular.
I'm pulling for Qyntel as a person, and was excited to hear about the positive changes he made in his life. If these allegations are true, then actions should be taken for the good of the team. But if they are not, I hope the media covers the truth as much as they are the allegations, and the Blazers stand up for one of their own publicly, otherwise I think you can forget about any FA ever wanting to play in this city.
