What?!

Surely, he jests!

Almost all the good teams are in the West. In fact, there are now as many good teams in the East as there are divisions -- three. After Detroit, Indiana and Miami, there isn't a team in the East that can be counted on to finish with a winning record. With the apparent demise of the New Jersey Nets, a .500 record could win the Atlantic Division. Some of the more interesting teams to watch will be:

The New Orleans Hornets, who were one of the better teams in the East and will surely be one of the worst in the West.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, who could claim the fourth spot in the East if Drew Gooden maintains his concentration.

The Los Angeles Lakers, who are now essentially owned and operated by Bryant.

The expansion Charlotte Bobcats, who . . .OK, they won't be very good.

The Phoenix Suns, who added Nash and will be using Amare Stoudemire, who is from Lake Wales, at center.

The Portland Trail Blazers, who might have the best all-around starting lineup in the league.

The Detroit Pistons and San Antonio Spurs, who quietly got a little better during the off-season, at least on paper.

No .. I'd wager we do.

The problem is that they are used completely improperly.

I said it before and I'll say it again - this team won't go anywhere with the coach they currently have or the roster they currently have (if they keep the coach).

Play.

The other thing is that he said "might." That could be dependant on a lot of things. As in Theo Ratliff "might" be the best defensive player in the league if he stays healthy and stays in position when defending his man 1 on 1. Zach Randolph "might" be the best offensive player in the league if his passing can improve. Darius Miles "might" be the best swing man in the game if he lives up to his potential.

But it could also be that this guy is a HUGE Derek Anderson fan. Maybe he thinks we've got one of the best back courts in the league with DA and Damon. I tend to think of our back court as practically useless. They waste time that should be spent by Randolph and Miles scoring. And their defense is worse than their offense.

But if this guy thinks they're good players I could see why he thinks we might have the best all-around starting lineup in the league. As is I think we've got the best front court in the league. A little more help from the guys in the back and we might have something.

I just don't see it. The fact that the starting backcourt is below average alone is enough for me to give that statement a thumbs down, without having to really analyze it at all.

Keep in mind I'm not saying the lineup sucks here -- we're talking about whether they're the best in the league or not.

Arguing that you guys might have the best starting frontcout in the league is a less tricky battle to win. I'm not checking every team to see if that's potentially true, but it's less obviously wrong.
