What does Seattle gain by trading Ray Allen for SAR? Absolutely nothing, there's just as well off keeping Allen and letting his contract run out. In fact, they're better off because Ray is a better player and they'd have him for the remainder of the season. Allen for SAR has no chance of happening, and never has. If Ray is traded, the Sonics will actually gain something for him, not just cap space because *newsflash* they have cap space already if they just keep him!

One thing they have to gain is they can probably re-sign Shareef for 8-9 million per year. They know Allen won't resign for anything less than the max, so trading for Shareef saves them a significant amount of cap room after all.
