Telfair Must Wait (NY Newsday)

From: NY Newsday

Quote:
There is no guarantee that Sebastian Telfair will play significant minutes in his rookie NBA season. Still, the former Lincoln High star is living a dream, suiting up each night as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Before this year, no point guard had managed to go straight from high school to the pros. Trail Blazers general manager John Nash says there is something special about the 19-year-old Telfair, who just eight months ago was playing for Lincoln in the PSAL playoffs.

"He's just got an awareness and maturity about him," said Nash, who took Telfair with the No. 13 overall pick in the draft last June. "He's well advanced beyond his years in his willingness to accept the pressure and all that comes with the NBA career and lifestyle."

Telfair returns to the metropolitan area for the first time as a professional tonight when the Trail Blazers visit the Nets. "We're all excited about it," his mother Erica said yesterday. "We've got 25 people going."

One thing that Telfair has had to accept is that he will get very little floor time playing behind veteran point guards Damon Stoudamire and Nick Van Exel.........

Twenty-five people coming to watch him sit on the bench? Cool.

The Nets suck. If we play well, we can get 30 point lead by 4th qtr and let Telfair put on show for friends and family.

Go Blazers

Yep.. And if anyone here had a son make it to the NBA, they'd do the same thing.

He'll end up getting a good amount of time this season. Nick is sure to be injured with that knee problem for a few weeks and he will have to play and then he will never sit on the bench again. I think that sounds about right.
