OT: Why steroid abuse matters

Great article by George F. Will on the baseball steroid scandal:

Historically speaking, people are basically talking out of their arses with no actual knowledge of what the real history is. Nor do I, so I might as well join in...

Steroids and other doping agents have been extremely prevalent throughout sport -- and the non-sport entertainment industry -- for 20-30 years, and likely 20 years prior to that.

The real pros will tell you, legal supplements these days are as effective as the steroids used in the 50's.

The new prohormones and what not are off the chart in every respect...

It's been a steady advancement over 50 years, so all the people jumping on the bandwagon about how modern doping is devaluing the history really have no idea what that baseline reference point ought to be.

Ahhhh the modern day confrontation of a pumped up steroids pitcher benefiting from Tommy John surgery and throwing a spitball bearing down on a pumped on steroids hitter enjoying the benefits of Lasiks surgery and swinging a corked bat... the classic duel.

Why steroid use doesn't matter... ratings have never been higher.

That's just it. Steroid use has not changed in the past couple years, just the awareness of it has. All is good until people start obsessing over it, at which point the closets start looking real crowded.

With skeletons, right?

We are talking about steriods and not other social issues and baseball, right?

Yes, that's what I had in mind. Some doors, I'm just not interested in opening.
