IF TOR mgmt wants cap space (relief) where else are they going to go?
Philly? They can dangle Glenn Robinson. But they don't want to take on Rose either and Atlanta TRADED for Antoine Walker's CONTRACT not him as a player, so ATL isn't an option either.
If you measure by cap space then SAR expiring contract ($14.6 mil) is larger than Robinson's ($12 mil), not to mention SAR has way more worth as a PLAYER, meaning he could be dealt AGAIN for strictly youth (ie picks and\or a young player) if TOR desired.
Is CLE interested in dealing Ilgaukas expiring deal? I seriously doubt it.
Dallas has Alan Henderson at $8mil and little else. Maybe TOR could wrangle a Henderson and a Marquis Daniels? Although I HIGHLY doubt DAL would do that (adding Carter to Stackhouse AND Finley?...yikes)
Golden State has Dale Davis @ $11mi, and agian I doubt they would deal Dunleavy or Richardson as well in the deal. Maybe TOR could get Pietrus, but I have read GS is very high on him.
The Clips Kerry Kittles @ $10.3 mil. Would the Clips deal Jaric, or Simmons in addition to Kittles? Maybe
MIN has Sprewell @ $14.6 mil, Would TOR trade Carter straight up for Spreewell? I doubt it. But would MIN give up Ebi or a draft pick? I doubt they would give up Ebi, just like POR won't give up Outlaw or Monia. The draft pick? maybe, but if POR offered a pick, it would be a better one, and I doubt MIN is interested in messing with their team.
SEA has Ray Allen @ $14.6mil, but I can't see them even entertaining an Allen for Carter swap, particularly with how well they are playing of late, and Allen's talk of possibly resigning.
That is basically it. Those are the other big contracts out there besides POR (SAR $14.6, Damon $13,5, NVE $12.79 team option)
I think TOR is in a tough spot, first I can't see any of the teams listed above taking on Rose's contract. Some teams like CLE & SEA are playing well and don't want to make a trade. Others like GS, ATL and the Clips value the cap space more than getting Carter. That leaves possibly Dallas, and doubtfully MIN. I don't see a lot of options for TOR.
Since POR doesn't want Rose, what about a Carter & Lamond Murray?
for
SAR, Qyntel Woods ($1.12mil) and Stepania ($827,000) (all expiring contracts BTW)?
TOR can unload Murray ($5.25mil) with Carter ($13.83mil) and if So-Cal's (err Storyteller) cap figures are correct
Player Salaries
That would leave TOR with approximately $36,880 comitted in salary next year, assuming they pass on the team options for Woods & Sow. The question is what will the salary cap be next year? Currently it is $43,870, will it be higher? lower?
Assuming it stays the same (not likely), that leaves TOR next year with only $7mil under the cap, not enough for a significant FA.
However, the year after Rose will be expiring (Over $16mil) and there is a team option on Peterson ($5.45mil). That COULD be a $21 mil windfall, putting then WAY under the cap.
Is it true that Alvin Williams' contract was non iinsured? If it is, TOR is screwed on him, I doubt any team would touch him. IF he is, then he could
possibly be involved in a POR\TOR, but his contract (and Rose) is what is really hurting TOR. If he was included in a trade to POR it would be another $6.5mil off TOR books. Giving them around $14mil in cap space NEXT YEAR.I think POR would be amiable to taking on Williams, provided that 1) his contract IS guaranteed and he is DONE (no comebacks), meaning cap relief in 1? 2? years for POR, OR some sort of buyout can be pre-arranged. But that is real iffy IMO.
The bottom line is Raptor fans\mgmt can demand all they want, but the reality is TOR is in a tough spot. Particularly with Rose and Williams' contracts. NO OTHER TEAM, outside of perhaps NY (who wants to send their garbage contracts back) wants anything to do with Rose's contract, or Williams' for that matter.
