Atlanta has nothing to lose though. Walker has an expiring contract AND they could probably use someone like Stoudamire....if not, they get the same cap relief......we can get some youth for Antoine Walker possibly...maybe send them Qyntel Woods.....

Stoudamire has a house in ATL I believe too....

Walker, while a ballhog can be a GREAT option for Randolph to kick the ball out for 3-pointers......

But...

...what if Damon continues to stink things up on the court? Won't that scare potential suitors off? Or, assuming they'd only be interested in him for the cap relief at the end of the season, do they (other teams who might be interested in trading for him) even care how he's playing?

And if they don't, I see NO reason not to bench him and start Telfair with an eye toward him being the starting PG next season.

How's that nothing to lose? They give up an expiring contract for an expiring contract, i.e. nothing to gain, but in the process bring in one of the biggest negatives in the league. I'd call that a lot to lose.

Some teams will be dying to get a massive expiring contract like Damon's.

If we assume, Dan, that Damon is a negative on the floor (and I find it hard to argue with that), why SHOULD a team give "full value" for his expiring deal when they could get him two months later?

I totally agree with the premise of this thread: that the team should simply wait until they feel they can maximize the value for the player.

They did that with Rasheed (although it might turn out that the Jamison deal would have been better; Dallas turned Antawn into a lottery pick; we'll have to wait and see what SAR gets in a trade), and they did NOT do it with Bonzi (which was and is my primary criticism of the deal).

The team is not going to be going anywhere this year without big, big changes. And the only way we can make the big, big changes required is for Nash to play things well and not rush to move someone because of our record or a player's slump.

There are other expiring contracts out there, and some of them even players that aren't major negatives.

I agree with that part -- limit the Damon exposure time -- but I disagree that he's worth touching at all. I guess we'll know in two months...

If Damon had any positive value to a team, such as Rasheed, Antawn, and Shareef had, it would be a much different matter. Those were all guys worth seeing what they could add, in addition to the salary relief, in case they were kept around at reduced rates. I don't see anyone entertaining such thoughts with Damon. Is there anyone around the league that still respects him? I sure haven't seen any indication of it, JQuick aside.

No doubt. Not that I'm doubting you, Dan, but which players have big expiring contracts like Portland and would be willing to take on a big deal, even when it's attached to a big-time player?

Maybe those player-team combos are out there, but I can't think of them.

Dunno, Ed. That's StoryTeller's area of expertise. There's always someone, though.
