Canzano blog: Blazers points scored per shot

Interesting stat on Canzano's OLive blog for shooting efficiency..

Zach Randolph averages 17.79 shots per game, but taking into account points per shot.. his number is 1.16 points per shot.

Amare Stoudemire leads this category with 1.6 points per shot.

Nowitski 4th (1.42), Gasol 6th (1.4)

This stat divides points by shot attempts.

Now ranking the Blazers

Przybilla 1.71
Abdur-Rahim 1.39
Patterson 1.28
Telfair 1.26
Randolph 1.16
Ratliff 1.16
Miles 1.13
Anderson 1.11
Van Exel .96
Outlaw .95
Stoudamire .94

Granted this doesn't mean Joel should be taking 20 shots per game, but it sort of shows who's the most efficient with their shot attempts.
It doesn't take into account free throws, though, which is the sad thing.

But hey.. interesting stat I guess with Stoudamire at the bottom and Abdur-Rahim up top.

seems like another way to look for bad things to say about Zach. If you get fouled a lot during your shot attempts then this stat does not make much sense to me. You take the ball to hole hard, miss the shot because you were fouled. This stat only shows this as a negative, since by this stat you have no points for 1 missed fg attempt.

#1: When you get fouled, no shot attempt is recorded.

#2: Free throws ARE counted in this number. It's simply total points divided by FGA. Looking at Telfair, if free throws weren't considered, he'd be at .822, since 20 of his 57 points are from the stripe.

Free throws are actually OVERREPRESENTED in this stat, since players who go to the line more often get more points per shot attempt than those who do not, and those free throw points appear to be "free" in the eyes of the stat.
