That's not true. Stores love selling gift cards, because they make money off of selling value. They'll never be spent to 100% of their value in all cases, so it's one of the easiest ways to make a significant profit.

Problem is if, say, you were to buy a sweater for $50 before Christmas, but opted for a $50 gift card. Then, the person you gave the gift card came into the store after Christmas and picked up that same sweater for $30 and got some $20 pants to go along with it, then.............
Anywho, that's what I heard on a news report.
