Slipping away

Our once-iron grip on the 12th seed is slipping away, as Utah moved within 2 games after tonight's action.

Fortunately, Golden State and New Orleans have continued to struggle so we should be able to stay in the top 13 in the West.

Can you say top 5 pick? I guess there's always a silver lining somehow...

You bet! A top 5 pick is much better than making the playoffs and flaming out in the first round.

Gee, I dunno...

With all the young players we have and are bringing along, I'm not so sure the "answer" is another rookie. I think I's rather make the playoffs even if it meant a first round exit.

With a top 5 pick you can find someone who can step in right away and play. Heck... we get in the top 5 and we have a shot at #1 don't we?

It would be our luck if we landed the #1 pick in a year where the draft looks to be pretty weak at the top. There doesn't seem to be a clear #1 choice as in some years (Lebron, Duncan, Shaq).

Actually, I just looked over the #1 picks for the last 15 years and there's only a handful of franchise/MVP quality players picked #1.

2004 - Dwight Howard
2003 - Lebron James
2002 - Yao Ming
2001 - Kwame Brown
2000 - Kenyon Martin
1999 - Elton Brand
1998 - Michael Olowokandi
1997 - Tim Duncan
1996 - Allen Iverson
1995 - Joe Smith
1994 - Glenn Robinson
1993 - Chris Webber
1992 - Shaquille O'Neal
1991 - Larry Johnson
1990 - Derrick Coleman

And notice how tall the BOLD one's are!?!

A top pick can be good trade bait though. Players are at their HYPED top value. Or, it gives us ability to part with a young asset (Outlaw, Khryapa, Monia) with safe knowledge of being able to replace them.
