This is the oldest playground challenge in the world. When somebody is getting in your face, or asking you to do something you don't want to do, you throw out your chin and say, "Make me." The intent behind the words is, "Come over here and physically try to make me do it, you sucker!" and is often the prelude to a fight. Darius Miles was clearly suggesting to Cheeks that he wasn't man enough to physically throw him out of the room, but if he wanted to try, Miles was ready to go at it. I don't see how anyone can read this any other way.
The "Make me" quote isn't even an exact quote! Canzano wrote that is what Darius "basically" said, it was not verbatim. Even if it was it is definitely not a physical challenge on the surface. You are reading more into the article than actually is there.

He could have even said something like...

"What, are you going to call security?"

"What, are you going to throw me out of here or something?"

or

"I'm not leaving"

Those aren't physical challenges, they're insubordination which has already been established.

Remember, Canzano is a "columnist" as he says, not a journalist.

I'd be sick of Cheeks by now. Telling me what to do when he can't coach right. He actually coached a good game against SA, thats what our team could be like if he could actually coach. And TalkHard, that word is used a lot nowadays. I'm not saying its right at all, but sometimes you just crack. You can't tell me you havent ever had to listen to someone you know doesn't know waht he is talking about. Just let it go. You are overreacting. Cut Miles? Are you kidding me? for Saying the N-word which some african-americans use to talk to each other? Rappers say it in their songs, and NBA players it to. We just don't hear it.

Canzano has nothing else to write about so you know he drools over this kind of stuff. It's always amusing the way he implies that his thoughts are shared by everyone in the community. He's a drama queen. I especially got a kick out of this part:

Quote:
Don't be fooled into anyone telling you this incident is insignificant. It threatens to send the rest of the season straight down the city sewer line. But only if the Blazers fail to back their coach, and educate their future.
This coming on the heels of one of the worst months in Blazer history. Come on sensationalist, how much worse can the season get at this point?

This has no real significance Zaney. It's a player frustrated with losing and knowing his coach sucks. Frankly, I find it exciting that Darius cares that much. And hopefully is excellerates Mo's departure.

tlong, I am disgusted by your attempt to shift focus away from Darius Miles' inexcusable behavior and put it on Mo Cheeks and John Canzano. Cheeks was doing what every coach does, pointing out a mistake by his player, when Miles erupted into a tirade of racial epithets and humiliated Mo in front of the entire team. You cannot justify that, no matter how hard you try.

And for that matter, Miles has NO LEVERAGE at all. He's an ignorant punk who has no manners, and no respect for authority, and he will surely lose a big chunk of change for this outrageous behavior. If it can be shown that Miles violated the terms of his contract, and the Blazers have the guts to terminate him, he will be out on the street where he belongs, with all the other punks and ingrates.
When I read the Canzano article, I laughed out loud when I read that Darius is the biggest disappointment of the season. I follow every blazers game and believe this to be completely untrue. This really makes me wonder how far the local media goes to bash the blazers on issues in which I don't know the whole story on. This is a really interesting topic and a good post, not an "attempt to shift focus away from Darius Miles' inexcusable behavior and put it on Mo Cheeks and John Canzano." Because clearly, a post of that nature would be "disgusting"!

Players that are bigger "disappointments" than Darius Miles:

1.) Derek Anderson - any player who misses two games for a tooth ache ought to be sent back to the kiddie league. I like DA, but that's ridiculous.

2.) Richie Frahm - OK, Blazer fans shouldn't expect a whole lot out of him, but a backup SG should at least have something he's good at. Still waiting to see Frahm do something good.

3.) Theo Ratliff - due mostly to injury, Ratliff has only occasionally been the defensive stopper we saw last year.

4.) Shareef Abdur-Rahim - again, mostly because of injury, Abdur-Rahim is not providing the Blazers with the 15 and 8 he was giving the Blazers before.

5.) Nick Van Exel - he has the occasional good game, but his reluctance to shoot and his shakiness on defense really has compromised how much he gives Portland.

6.) Zach Randolph - again, it's an injury that's been the biggest problem with Randolph, and it's hard to argue with his 20-and-10 average, but he hasn't improved in the all-important category of "making your teammates better."

After that, I've been impressed with what I've seen out of Portland's players, by and large.

Damon's had some superlative offensive performances, and has anyone else noticed that opposing guards have had a much harder time posting up Damon since he put muscle on last summer? Sure, they can still shoot over the top of him still, but taking a dimension away from players is a good step.

Joel Przybilla has been nothing short of phenomenal, considering his relative paucity of talent, in the weeks that Randolph has been hurt.

Ruben Patterson has accepted his role and stepped in beautifully as a starter with the rash of injuries. If every Blazer had Patterson's relentless energy, Portland would have a winning record, no doubt.

Sebastian Telfair has given the Blazers meaningful minutes, he's held his own on defense, and shown flashes of greatness with his ball-handling, passing, and ability to convert in traffic. A keeper.

Finally, Darius Miles has been a mixed bag. While I like his all-around game, I am concerned about the young Blazers' team having a negative influence around, even if he might be right about the particulars (and the results) of Cheeks' coaching decisions. I'm not a fan of players who are coach-killers, especially when those players don't have the talent of Michael Jordan (Doug Collins) or Kobe Bryant (Phil Jackson).

Unless the Rose Garden collapses during a game and kills all 317 fans in attendance, I really don't know how things could get worse.

You actually have to give Frahm a little playing time in order to call him a disappointment.....If given the chance Frahm could be the best outside shooter on this team.....Its just too bad that all of his outside shots are taken up by Nick and Damon.....

First, Miles was out of line and the suspension was deserved.

However, I believe it's pure media hype that's making a big deal out of the racial slur. From my perspective, based on the number of N-bombs dropped between black men (from a variety of backgrounds) who may or may not know each other, it's not that big of deal. This perspective is based purely on my basketball experiences.

Here's the portion that bothered me....

Quote:
......The situation continued when Cheeks dismissed the team and began leaving toward general manager John Nash's office, when Miles chided him with the comment, "That's right, run to your daddy." When Cheeks did go to Nash's office, Miles burst in, and another argument ensued......
Unadultered insubordination.

Today's 180 collumn from Con-Zany...

http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/ore...0385820660.xml

... sorry Cheeks bashers, apparently the team is for staying the course. Miles has made his appology to the fans and team, and the rest of the guys rallied around their coach. Feel free to keep grinding away at your axes, but his head probably won't roll until the offseason IMO.

Absolutely. Seems very unacceptable.

Want to know what else bothers me? That Cheeks is giving out this much information.

The best teams seem to keep this sort of thing "in house". Even if it results in a suspension, airing out dirty laundry doesn't seem like it's in the team's best interests.

Of course, it's in Mo's best interests to let everyone know what he's going through, since he's only got about 40 more games as the coach of the Blazers, but I wish that the solidarity Cheeks seeks from his players was something he'd be willing to ascribe to, as well.
