McElhiney staying as Rhythm's coach

The slow recovery from the Nashville Rhythm's embarrassing incident Saturday night finally wound to a close yesterday, as Ashley McElhiney agreed to stay on as coach of the ABA franchise.
She'll be on the bench Saturday night when the Rhythm play the St. Louis Flight at her alma mater, Gleason High School.
''Things happen, it was an unfortunate incident,'' McElhiney said last night. ''Me, along with the players and the organization are trying to put this behind us and look forward to playing our next game.''
McElhiney, the first woman coach of a men's professional team, didn't flinch when co-owner Sally Anthony got in her face on the bench and ordered her to sit Matt Freije, who was playing in the second game of a pricey two-game contract. The nationally publicized incident ended with security guards marching Anthony off the floor at Lipscomb's Allen Arena.
Anthony fired McElhiney after the game, but it had been unclear since then whether Anthony spoke for the team's entire ownership.
Yesterday's statement from the franchise said ''the majority owners and the team general manager have since confirmed that this action was taken without their consent.''

Paramedics were dispatched to Anthony's home early Sunday. A caller identifying herself as Anthony's sister-in-law said Anthony had mixed *****, a prescription drug for anxiety, with alcohol and cut up her arms with scissors. The Tennessean confirmed Anthony was released by Vanderbilt Medical Center on Monday.
Rhythm forward Adam Sonn, who's out with a broken foot, said he thought family problems were the reason McElhiney's situation took so long to be resolved.
''There are some factors deeper than probably everybody knows,'' he said. ''We're trying to respect the Bucher family, something unfortunate has gone on there. But it should have been resolved or made public a little sooner.
''Obviously there were problems with Sally that need to be dealt with, not from the team perspective but from the family perspective, and it's not my place to speculate.''
