Re: Moses Malone in a dunk contest

More pain. I think the story goes something like this. We didn't keep Moses Malone because we already had Lloyd Neal.

Re: Moses Malone in a dunk contest

yeah he never made it past the preaason in a Blazer uni.... a big time Hall of Famer right in our midst.. and he never broke his feet either...

man... that was about as lame as choosing Larue Martin over Bob McAdoo

or Sam... well.. you know!

Come on - Trader Bob. Some slack is needed here.

Bob McAdoo publicly said he would sign with the ABA if drafted by PDX. We made the safe selection. No - LaRue didn't work out.

We already had Clyde - we didn't have a good Center - no one knew MJ would become what he did, nor that Sam would have such brittle legs.

Moses was projected only as a Forward back then, not a Center. We had Maurice (who was better - then) and Lloyd as b/u.

It's very easy to look in hindsight and see all the mistakes.

I don't consider any of these mistakes. I consider them decisions that didn't work out.

Angry Re: Moses Malone in a dunk contest

I disagree about Malone. My recollection is that our then tight-fisted owner was upset at paying so much for a "back-up center." The fact that Walton was made of porcelin was dismissed as irrelevant.

One further note: we traded him to Buffalo for 1 first round pick. Within days, they traded him to Houston for *2* first rounders! Why did Portland take the Braves offer when a better deal was on the table? Because they were too cheap to add 2 first round picks to the roster!

Add in the fact that we gave up PETRIE to get Malone, and the whole thing was a travesty!

slight error.

we traded Steve Hawes and Geoff PEtrie (who never played another game in the NBA) for the pick that got us Maurice Lucas.
