For the Trade Junkies

Just did some math to figure something out....

I keep reading that trades must be within 25%....That's not entirely true.

Team A sends 10mil in trade. Within 25% would bw 7.5mil to 12.5mil...But...7.5mil + 25% is only 9.375mil, so it doesn't comply with the CBA.

The actual range given both teams over the cap is the ammount coming back in needs to be between 80% and 125% of the ammoutn going out.

Example I
Team A sends 10 mil
80% of 10 mil is 8 mil
125% of 8 mil is 10mil

Example II
Team A sends 10 mil
125% of 10 mil is 12.5 mil
80% of 12.5 mil is 10 mil

so if you wnat to looka t what you are sending and what you need to get back, multiply it by .8 for the bottom range and by 1.25 for the top range, and anything in between will comply given no BYC or things like that.

BTW I just checked they still get the 100,000 wiggle room at the top end.

Uggh...I was never much good at math, but I think I kinda of get it.

Assuming that both teams are over the cap and that neither has a trade exception (and taking into consideration the additional $100,000), yes this is pretty much true.

Saying "within 25%" is not (as you point out) technically correct. The CBA says that you cannot receive more than 125%+$100,000. Essentially, you have to make two calculations - one for each team. You can't just apply 25% in 2 different directions.

What you have to do is say "Team A gives up A amount and can take back 125% of A amount plus $100,000". Then you have to say "Team B gives up B amount and can take back 125% of B amount plus $100,000". If both sides work, you have a workable trade. Trying to compress the two calculations into one leaves yourself open for miscalculation.

Ok now my feeble mathematical mind gets it... Thanks for the explanation on the calculation fellas!

Re: For the Trade Junkies

The easiest way I found out to do the lower end is to divide by 1.25. The 1.25 representing 125%

10 mil / 1.25 = $8 mil

The above side is easy 1.25 * 10 mil = $12.5 mil
