Is The NBA a "Full-Time" Job?

OK, from what I understand, the word on Sheed is he usually comes to camp somewhat out of shape - specifically, that he doesn't work out over the summer and usually starts that particular regimen once the season starts. That he really doesn't get up to "par" until around January.

To me, that seems bogus!

I guess, to use that old, "Geez, for the kind of money these guys are making......." adage, it would seem reasonable to expect that every player be required to partake in an off-season conditioning and/or weight training program, even documenting their activities with whatever club they use. I mean, to me, a full-time job is just that, full-time....12 months out of the year.

I can understand the guys getting a few weeks off during the summer. But, taking the entire off-season off to suit their particular pleasures would be totally unacceptable to moi.

But, hey, then again, who am I?

I am not sure we can ever go by what we've heard. you will eventually hear everything. I heard, at the beginning of the season from an assistant coach, that Rasheed had been working out over the Summer. I know some aching joints (there must be some reason Rasheed wears that knee brace) need absolute rest to recover. Of course you can always work the other parts of your body.

In contrast.....guys like Scottie Pippen, Michael Jordan, Karl and Malone have regimens all year long - every single year.

Is it any wonder that they're still playing?

If Sheed was 8 inches shorter he'd be an out of work fry cook at Burger Barn and everyone knows it including Sheed! This guy was not even passing at UNC when he left and Tarheel players have amazing support to get them through.

BTW- UNC is one of the hardest out of state schools to get into in the ACC. They have an 85/15 policy. That means that they only except 15%of kids out of state. The SAT's there are 1350+ out of state and a 3.80 and above GPA. Do you guys really think Sheed could have made those type of marks if he wasn't 6''11 being from Phili? The biggest problem with Sheed is he doesn't respect what he has. Sheed could be the best PF in the game, however he thinks the world owes him something? He should really think about those kids he gives those coats to cause without that extra foot of height, that could be one of his kids!

haven't you ever noticed

Sheed almost always wants out of a game to rest waaay to early?
It's not like he is diving to the ground for loose balls or what ever.

He doesn't look like he is very energetic..
maybe the pot??

I definitely think that professional sports should be a year-around sport. In the end, though, it all comes down to a truth in every industry: The best in the industry work the hardest.

Many athletes treat the off-season as vacation time. And, if we're willing to pay ticket prices to watch them at whatever skill level they get from that, then they're making what the market will bear...their salary for 6-7 months of work.

Other athletes work to improve themselves in the off-season, either because they must to remain in the NBA, or because they want to truly excel...and they often make more money.

So, like in all jobs, people can choose how much to invest in their work and they are paid / employed accordingly.

you know, one phrase I didn't quite was Climbed the golden ladder.

I mean, I know it was rebounding.

Or am I remembering the saying wrong?
