Looks to me like that star would be Payton, at least out of the blocks. I could imagine Woods and/or Z-bo turning into that star through the season. Failing that, though, the next year should be promising. Bob could work his usual magic and with guys like Payton, DA, and Battier around to help focus the team it might work out nicely. Also, who knows what sort of player Wallace might turn into with Payton in his face? Not that I'm going to put even a single egg in any basket of 'Sheed's but maybe. And even if not, I think we'd be better set for at least the next few years to come. Here's to hoping that ol' can, as the saying goes, make it real.

Man, you picked the wrong day to retire Sabonis and trade Patterson. Sabas was the best player in a Blazer uni last night and he's almost done?!?!

I hea ya talkin Wanker, but you have to admit Sabas' performance last night was a bit of a rarity for the season. Patterson has been playing great. He can be used to address a more dire concern for next season a Center.

Oh, Schilly, how could you????
Sabonis will retire when he is not having fun anymore. Last night, he was still having fun.
Although a performance like last night certainly is a rarity for Sabas nowadays, he does not HAVE to have a game like that to be an important weapon off the bench.
A ton of teams would absolutely love to have a 7-3 guy with Sabonis' skills who is no longer concerned about his own stats and willing to play whatever bench role he is assigned. I think the Blazers would be idiots not to re-sign Sabonis if he is willing to play again next season.
I hope Sabonis feels like he has at least one more NBA season in him.

It is a rarity in the regular season, but he's a center who can change the course of a game on any night, and I want that in the post season. If we face the Kings, he matches up well against Divac. The Wolves don't have somebody who can match his size. Against Shaq, well, he's another big, big body. I don't see him being much of a factor against the Mavs, though. He'll just get run out of the gym.
Those are going to be some close matchups, and one good game from Sabonis could make all the difference.

I need to clarify something.
I didn't mean I hope Sabas and Pippen retire, that's just my hunch. My hopes were for the other moves.

Just chiming in with Crazy and Wanker on this one. He rarely hurts us and often enough helps. If Sabas feels up for another year (or even two?) I'm all for it. I trust our coaching staff to simply pull him if/when he's getting too badly beat down the floor. Also, partly because Sabas and Damon play so well together, I'm hoping they'll both be around next year. Call me foolish.

No No No
I don't agree with this.
Keep Ruben-we must. He is the ONLY energy guy we have!
Sabas has 2 more years on his contract?
Scottie-well-retirement is possible so OK here. BUT, if he plays-he stays!
Why on earth would we want Shane Battier?
The trade for Gary will probably happen but let's keep DD and get rid of Bonzi.
Agreed-keep AD

Was this a rhetorical question? I'm not sure, so I'll clarify to the best of my knowledge.
Last summer when Sabonis returned to the Blazers, he signed a 1+1+1 contract--both he and the Blazers having options on the 2nd and 3rd years.
I can't remember the monetary figures for sure, but I think the total was for $15 million or something like that......$7 million for this season and $4 million each for the two subsequent seasons. Does that sound right to the rest of you contract experts?

That sounds familiar to me but I'd hardly count myself an expert regarding such things.

so..to solve the problem with Bonzi being lazy..we trade for someone who doens't play defense, shoots a basket on the other teams hoop to get a rebound for a tripple double, has had fights with the coach, and is just as much of a punk as bonzi?
