It doesn't lead to future acqusitions, it upgrades Portland's team hugely. Pierce is playing at a tremendously elite level and would make Portland a far better team than Miles does. Outlaw hasn't been terribly impressive, so if he's the cost of doing business, so be it.

Pierce is also not particularly old, around 27 or 28.

Teams don't generally get better by lurking in the lottery and hoarding cap room for "the big free agent strike." The vast majority of the time, they get better by pulling off shrewd trades that create a core of good-to-great players. Pierce would be one of them.

Re: Trade idears

The Blazer Blog had the possibility of picking up Darko. Anyone interested? He would be a backup PF and who knows maybe we can get a Jermaine O'Neal type steal. We sure could use one. Depending on the price I would be willing to clear a SF for him.

I think if they stand pat, (barring a really lucky bounce here or there) at best, they probably wouldn't be any different with or without Pierce, cept that it'd be sooner.

BTW, I don't know how much weaker they'd be than the Warriors, Hornets and Cavs, but it wouldn't be any more than if they stand pat. As for the Warriors, Baron Davis is only 2 years younger than Pierce (actually, 18 months). And Pierce has been more durable than Davis has been.

The thing is, with Pierce, they'd get better sooner. And when Pierce may be "slipping", the other guys would be starting their climb and Pierce could be a valuable asset on that team.
The trade is not worth making unless Portland can contend in 07 and 08. Pierce turn 29 this year. The Blazers would need at least one other piece and they would still be banking on Webster and Telfair to improve. Add another piece or keep Miles and I like the trade.

If you offered me Miles or Pierce, I'd take Pierce easily. His shot might improve but Pierces shot is always tons better. And it's debateable if Miles would ever even come close to being as good a shooter as Pierce is, EVEN if you take into account that Pierce might be playing better for a trade.

As much as I like Miles, I don't think he has the combined skills to be a top 10 player (which, argubably, Pierce is close to a top 10 player). He's a better scorer (by a lot), a better rebounder (by a lot), averages more assists, and most importantly, is a proven long term scorer from both inside, outside and from the charity stripe (and he's a MUCH better shooter there).

Sure, he hasn't "won" anything, but he's won a whole lot more than Miles ever has.

I would rather have Pierce now for the next two years but like I said Pierce alone wont make them contenders and Pierce might not give the players much after those years. If Miles comes back and does not fit with the system or the Blazers feel they need more range I would look at Morrison as another option even if they draft and traded him.

Shrewd trades, future acqusitions same thing to me unless you add big talent soon and have the money to pay your own freeagents Pierce would be a waste.

Re: Trade idears

what that we need a pf? yeah I would have put Aldrige there but I am worried about his injury prone past.

I mean if we get pierce we could draft morrison or gay too

gay/morrison then trade the detroit and 2nd round picks to get the highest pf we could get? thats why i said Taigo but I would like a pf with size! at least 6'10 preferably 6'11+

Aldridge on 1 leg will still be better then Splitter or Bargani, those guys are weak Euro players and will take a couples years to develop at the strength necessary to play down low in the NBA.

I rather have Shelden Williams then Aldridge. He is barely 6'9 but he is the best shot blocker, and rebounder in the draft. Some say Bargnani could be an allstar so he should get a look too but I would rather go with Williams. You get a jump shot, defense, blocking, rebounding and a lot less risk and wait and see. Williams beat up on Aldridge head to head.

Williams is closer to 6'7" than 6'9" He'll be lucky to sneak into the lottery. Aldridge is a legit top three talent.

Williams is the best rebounder in the draft? Aldridge gets more rebounds in fewer minutes.

Re: Trade idears

They both play 30 minns and get about 10 rebounds. Aldridge is playing on a team with worse shooters which means its easier to get boards and Williams has drifted away from the hoop to hit a lot of jumpers. Aldridge is rated higher because as a spohmore he has a greater upside. He looks like he might be a better low post scorer in the NBA but with Randolph there I rather have the defense and the jump shot. Also every PF listed at 6'9 is one or two inches shorter just like Randolph. Wingspan is more important then height and Williams has that. I want the Blazers to get a guy who is tough enough to play a back-up center roll too. At least with Williams the team gets tougher and they get another shot blocker.
