I've been hearing/reading a fair amount lately regarding various trade offers that John Nash has apparently rebuffed (Jack, Theo, {from today's Blog, below}, and Patterson, etc.). I sincerely hope this all won't end up being a chronic case of analysis paralysis when the dust all settles here..............
I read somewhere that Jerry West said (recently) that it's becoming more and more difficult to make trades in the NBA. One of main reasons he cited was that their are a lot of teams/GMs that dramatically OVER VALUE the talent on their rosters. I think, and it's just a guess, that many teams feel that way about John Nash and the Blazers. If I'm correct, I don't know how I feel about that?? On one hand it's good he's not making Bad Trades, but on the other . . . it would be nice to see a Good trade made at some point.

Re: Taking Your Foot Off First.....

Here's what Nash had to say in his interview on Hoopschronicles:

Quote:
Basketball is generally dominated by the great players. There is nothing wrong with securing the services of an overlooked player at a reasonable salary like Joel Przybilla, Juan Dixon or Steve Blake but the teams that win championships have top caliber players. Since most of the players were on the roster when Steve Patterson and I arrived three years ago had large salaries it made trading them for equal value difficult. Most of them were not performing up to the level of their salaries and hence good players were not available via trade. In fact the only player from that roster who has gotten a raise is Jeff McInnis and his difficulties in Cleveland were well chronicled. The other veterans who have moved on and secured new contracts are working for a fraction of what they were paid in Portland. So if viable trades aren't available and your team is over the cap then the draft is the final avenue to pursue talent.
Reading what he had to say, I don't think the Blazers have any interest in making trades that will make the team marginally better this season. I think they're looking to the draft in search of a franchise player and don't want to do anything that will cut our chances at a top pick. Unless somebody's willing to part with a very good player, why do something that will buy us a few more wins at the expense of dropping several positions in the draft?

Re: Taking Your Foot Off First.....

I'm sort of hoping the Blazers don't make a trade. We've got some of the best young talent in the league--why not let it develop and percolate a little and then see what happens?

It's crazy to give up on our young guys so soon. THIS IS A YOUTH MOVEMENT, FOLKS!
