Taking Your Foot Off First.....

It's hard to steal second base when you're too afraid to take your foot off first.

I've been hearing/reading a fair amount lately regarding various trade offers that John Nash has apparently rebuffed (Jack, Theo, {from today's Blog, below}, and Patterson, etc.). I sincerely hope this all won't end up being a chronic case of analysis paralysis when the dust all settles here..............

Quote:
.....Mike Barrett talked about the Spurs' interest in Blazer rookie Jarrett Jack during last night's TV broadcast. Barrett said San Antonio made an offer for Jack but were apparently rebuffed. The offer reportedly included 6-3 point guard Beno Udrih.

Also, Mike Rice said Theo Ratliff's name has been mentioned in all kinds of trade ideas, and one in particular had him going to Boston. I did a search but was unable to find the story he was referring to...but speaking of the Celtics, it sounds like Paul Pierce is on the block again....

Re: Taking Your Foot Off First.....

Im not sure if we should be complaining that the blazers haven't traded players, if who is offered isn't an improvement, or logical. I don't know if Beno is.

If they're turning down trades like Pierce (or an equally good SF/SG) for Miles, Ruben and a pick? Thats when you start kicking the shins of the Blazers.

Re: Taking Your Foot Off First.....

Agree with Hap on this one. I'm not sure I'd take a Jarrett Jack for Beno Udrih swap right now. Jack's got a good all-around game for a point guard, and I think he'll be an asset for us in the future.

But the premise that ABM proposes about being too afraid of the risk to not reap any reward is also true. I'm hopeful that Nash isn't afraid of making a bad trade and instead is praying we'll get better through the draft and player development. I don't think it just happens that way. The Spurs are the extreme exception to that rule. For whatever reason, they've gotten extremely lucky (Duncan, Parker, Ginobli) with their first round draft picks. I think everyone knew Duncan would be good, but the jury was decidely out on Parker and Ginobli.

If the opportunity to grab a decent player on the trading block comes up, I would hope Nash would strongly consider it and wouldn't reject it solely because of the contract size. I don't think I'd take the chance on Paul Pierce (not sure he's the next-level type of guy), but there are guys out there I would take a chance with.

Re: Taking Your Foot Off First.....

We are in a tough spot... we don't want to trade for veterans that when we are not making the playoffs anyway... especially when they take away from our youngsters playing time. I wouldn't trade Jack right now... of all our young guys Outlaw, Webster, Telfair, Ha, Monia, and Victor K, Jack seems to have the 'something' about him that makes me think he will be something special. I can see why Nash is not making trades... it is hard to see what we need right now because we are looking to a point a few years down the road. I wouldn't pay any veteran to lead us to 5 more wins... doesn't make sense. I doubt we take anyone on for anything other than min unless they are part of longterm plans.

Heh, I offered-up Hap's Pierce trade idea to Nash. He suddenly became non-responsive..

Re: Taking Your Foot Off First.....

While I think it would be nice for a bunch of young Blazers to gel and form a good team for a long time to come, I think that realistically you need to understand that most players sign contracts for a few years at a time, and that is the most amount of time that you can depend on them being on your team before they might possibly jump ship to somewhere else. In other words, if you can obtain a good player, and you have them on your team for several productive years, and they are a good player which will improve your team, you pull the trigger, regardless of age, if you are sure they will be productive players for the length of the contract signed. Bottom line: Does it improve the team.

Another thing I hear a lot of is that we shouldn't trade this player or that player until we are sure how good they will be, especially when it comes to the small forwards. Often enough, none of them get enough playing time for us, the fans, to have an idea of what kind of decision should be made. It is quite possible that every single one of them isn't worth the time the team has put into them. That is why IMO, since the team is not going anywhere, each one of them should be given a shot to see what they can do before Miles comes back. Nothing to lose. Everything to gain. Get some personnel decisions out of the way, and be able to make some decisions to move the team forward.

Last but not least, I would not have a problem with the younger players who can still play in the DL get some time there if they are not going to get time in the games. Guys like Monia could easily benefit at learning the difference of speed of the nba game vs what they have played.

hehe, I kind of asked him about that too, but I think he's just busy. I asked him if it would be a kind of trade that would go against the "direction" of the team (which I think is more of an "anti nash" mindset by fans, than factual).

No, an anti-Nash mindset by fans is that the team doesn't have a direction and is just covering up their ineptitude by claiming to be going through a youth movement.

THAT would be an anti-Nash mindset.

Re: Taking Your Foot Off First.....

I'll stop arguing with Hap to comment on ABM's thread... I just am not that worried about the team not making moves. I think that this year, and probably next year, are simply doomed and if there's a miracle trade available, I don't think that Nash (who's not stupid, I don't think... just not very good at his job) would pass on it.

It's easy to come up with scenarios where we can move Patterson for value or consolidate a couple of the 20 swing men on our roster into an upgrade in terms of prospects or current production, but Nash (and whatever rules his decisionmaking is operating under) hasn't been able to improve the club--or its future--through trades to this point and I don't believe that he's suddenly going to figure it out.

So the short answer is: I don't think that it matters if the team doesn't make any trades this season.

Re: Taking Your Foot Off First.....

here's what he said to me (although it wasn't necessarily an answer to the question I asked)

Quote:

I have no reason to believe that Boston would be interested in the idea you
pose based on my conversations with them. If they trade Pierce they either want
another top calibre player, an expiring contract and a very high lottery pick or
a young top prospect and an expiring contract.
I am really not at liberty to discuss trades especially specific names. The
information that I have shared with you has been published in various new
sources as well.
