OT: War Threads Poll
Ok here's the deal. We have been very open to allowing OT threads (to the point of fighting to allow them), but I think maybe one new restriction should be considered.
I think we should try to keep this basketball or at least regional sports related. I would like us all to consider that this forum should be an escape from the realities of the war and try to keep the war out of it.
I know we all like to talk about it, and we are all friends so we respect each others opinions. But at this point I think we need to keep this board War free. Obviously if any Major events develop this would be re-evaluted.

Thanks guys. There are places I go to see/talk about the war, and places I go for other things. It won't kill me to ignore war threads, but I'd rather this board be for the Blazers.

Ain't No Big Thing To Me, But
hasn't this been beat to death? I thought that OT topics were OK. That if you didn't want to read about the OT subject, you skipped over it. I'll live with whatever the majority want to do, but I'm not very excited about someone determining which OT subjects are ok. My vote is either have OT subjects or don't, not putting some OT subjects off limits while allowing discussion on others.

It has been beat to death. I do think we should allow OT Threads. But as a moderator, I do no want to edit or monitor war threads. I don't come here to talk about the war. So, I am talking out of both sides of my mouth. If push came to shove and it came down to a choice of OT Threads or not, I vote OT Threads be allowed even though I will DREAD moderating war threads.

Yeah this really is just as simple as not opening a thread you don't want to partake in. Does this really need a vote?

I agree-either OT is OK or not OK. BUT...the war is a big deal and it is very real and it is human nature to talk about it-unfortunately-emotions run high and the "talk" becomes anger and that creates a "forum war".....so in this circumstance...I guess saying OT for anything but the war MAY be acceptable. BUT-how and where do you draw the line?
Perhaps the board can create ONE war thread and let all use it...draw the line at people beginning new war threads? Keep it all in one thread and let those who want to use it do so and those who do not-not use it. Just a suggestion.
Personally I see talk in here quite often that I completely find unacceptable in a basketball forum but what can I do? I just try my best to ignore it....as long as it stays primarily focused on Blazer basketball I'll be happy enough.
I am wondering how one moderates a war thread? If people are not going to be allowed to voice their opinions then the only logical answer is NO-no war talk in a basketball forum....if it interrupts the games-well-then you have a new problem. Seems to me the mods would have a hard time setting bias aside on a subject as emotional as the war.....yep-now that I have thought about it-the best answer I can come up with is NO. No war threads. Go to a war forum if that is what you want to talk about.

bfan,
I would hope that BO meant that moderating war threads would be to enforce community standards. All opinions on the war should be allowed, I would think. Mainly, it would apply to not making personal attacks on each other, like the one newbie calling the others 'stupid'.

Unfortuantely FOr RG,BO, ABM and myself, it's not a simple case of ignore. We need to moderate, and a topic like war, there are a lot of emotions, politics and in this case religion that can be involved. All of which are a good brew for dissention and disruption.
I would like to keep the OT thing in tact, but I also would like to keep the War threads to a scant minimum. There are other forums on this website where such things can be discussed. At this point the war is affecting Post counts as it is, I would like to see people be able to use this forum to escape the war, not talk about it.

I'm gonna agree with Tom here. I enjoy having some OT threads on here to discuss things with my Blazer buddies, but maybe war topics should just go to the "Everything but basketball" section.
Personally I don't really like talking about politics/war/religion much. While it's not hard for me to just skip over those threads, I can see how not having them here would make things easier on the mods.
Just my $.015 (after taxes)

I just wanted to clarify that this means nothing more than..well...how could anyone not be influenced by their own opinions? I would think moderating a topic like the war in Iraq would be very difficult. Moderating is subjective. Let's stick to basketball-the war between LA and PDX is bad enough isn't it?

Good grief bfan1 - I never said a thing about editing opinions. It was about editing to maintain the community standards.
Quite frankly, I don't want to read everyone's opinion about the war - but as a moderator, reading threads is part of the commitment.
