Patterson
I heard on the local news Ruben was sent home from practice but they didn't know why. Anyone else hear anything about this?

Instead of jumping to conclusions (not you mgb), I'll suggest that it could be due to him being sick.

Re: Patterson
Nope, something happened.
God knows what, though. Doesn't sound like that big of a deal. I'll eagerly await the Canzano jeremiad.

Re: Patterson
Pretty obvious, like nobody saw this coming, AGAIN?
Nash told Nate to give Outlaw more of Ruben's minutes.

Re: Patterson
He was probably hazing some players or something Rueben like.....
I've witnessed first hand him giving Telfair crap.....it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't something along those lines....

Re: Patterson
So, it's "really" about Viktor? Somewhat interesting remarks from the CanzanoBlog..
Quote:
What's REALLY going on with Ruben Patterson?
Ruben Patterson and Blazers coach Nate McMillan clashed again during Friday's practice, resulting in Patterson being dismissed from the practice facility, according to the report by Jason Quick in today's Oregonian.
If you're among those hoping for a trade, the Feb. 23 trade deadline isn't likely to bring much in return for Patterson (salary: $6,353,200), so you're left to pray that there's already an agreement in place in which Patterson (who holds a player option for 2006-07) won't choose to exercise it.
More on this as it develops, but does anyone else here think the spat was over McMillan's post-game comments after the victory over Toronto?
Yeah, me too.
After Viktor Khryapa's 18-point, 12-rebound performance in the winning effort, McMillan said:
"We need someone who can step out there and play and not need the ball and not need touches to be ready to play. He will do the dirty work, and that's just as important as scoring. He does a nice job of just being in the right spot on the defensive end of the floor, he knows his sets, knows his reads and where to be on double teams. His basketball I.Q. is high."
The Blazers coach also said:
"I would say at the small forward spot, other than (Darius) Miles, I'm most comfortable with him."
"Him" being Khyrapa, not Patterson, who undoubtedly tossed The Oregonian sports section across his living room and jumped into defensive position after reading McMillan's comments in Quick's game story off the Raptors' victory.
This is about hurt feelings, people. Nothing a couple of, "Rube, you're still my Kobe stopper..." and "How about that job you did on LeBron?!!?" comments won't fix. Then again, welcome to Nate McMillan's world. More on this sociological experiment later......

Re: Patterson
What a team!!
The amazing thing about this team is that there is so much talent and potential (not style), that if a player gets sick, hurt, or has an emergency at home, they may have lost their starting job or minuets. Hence the Telfair, Ruben, Miles problem. Ruben has played very well within his game recently only to maybe loose some or many of his minuets to Victor or Outlaw. Both played well in the last game.
I really admire Nate and his handeling of this delema.
Some of you who are managers of people out there give your thoughts on how you might handle personel problems of a similar kind. Anybody?
Another question that comes to mind is "how many key players can we loose and still win games?

Re: Patterson
Ruben didn't necessarily lose his minutes. He was sick for one game, and Viktor and Travis stepped in and did a very good job. Now, after this spat, Ruben just might lose minutes. And for that matter, you could play Ruben 30-35 minutes per game, and he would STILL gripe about playing time.
D-Miles isn't back yet, but he remains the best Blazer at that position. He'll start.
Telfair isn't starting because he's being outplayed by Blake.

My intended main point was, that this team can win anyway with so many out. That is remarkable IMO.

Sorry, I read this--all these posts in this thread and others--and I don't get it. All I can think is that if Patterson played for Utah, Jerry Sloan would've torn him in bits and hidden the pieces in the high Uintas or something. Why wouldn't McMillan administer some really nasty discipline with this guy--nasty enough that he never causes another problem for his team??
Was Reuben always like this, or did he just become this way after Mo Cheeks left? Just wondering.

Re: Patterson
You have to handle every guy differently and know what they respond to. Sloan's one style fits all approach worked with malone and Stockton, but not for the younger players he's had since them.

I coach a middle school team, which has no comparison to NBA problems, and I have managed 40+ people in my last position. A good manager isolates what need to stop and gives positive reinforcement on behavior and work that brings you closer to your goal. Ruben should here from Nate what he is doing well and also hear what is unacceptable. If it happens around behavior which you should expect to change immediately, then hold him accountable.
I have no idea what Ruben has done, but all his problems seem to be around his behavior. He is an adult, and not new to NBA life and expectations. The problem that usually leads to problem is appeasing ego's and not being totally honest. An example brought up is him giving Telfair a bunch of flack in practice. If Nate wants that stopped he needs to pull him aside and tell him those comments are unacceptable and they will not happen in practice, the lockeroom or in a game again. It is fair, and it gives Ruben a cahnce to aske questions, disagree, stay why, etc. The problem is Ruben has probably done this for years and no coach was honest or confronted him. Again and honest discussion should happen to get him on the right track or let him know he won't play with that behavior.
