Hap Was Right About Clyde...
Here's what Sam Cassell had to say about The Glide's pre-game rituals..(as related to Zach's recent tardiness......)
Quote:
"Forty-one home games, and Clyde was there early once. If the game was at 7:30, I had to be in there at six o'clock. Clyde was a 7:05, 7:15 man. I'd tell him, 'When Rudy [Tomjanovich] is talking in front of the board, that's when you're coming in, taking your clothes off.' We'd sit there and Rudy would be talking -- this is 20 minutes before the game, 30 minutes before the game -- and Clyde would be strolling in. That's the Clyde I know. But that whole team understood that.
"It was the most amazing thing I've seen in my life. [Clyde] didn't stretch at all. He was 35, and the only stretching I saw Clyde do was before the jump ball...

Re: Hap Was Right About Clyde...
His practice habits supposedly weren't much better. There's a theory that at the highest level of any given sport, the athletic differences between average and great players are almost immeasurable. The disparity is all mental. Knowing Clyde's work ethic reputation (later reinforced in his coaching stint), it makes me wonder if he was really any less talented than Jordan. It's exactly the reason why a lot of great athletes don't make great coaches -- things came too easy for them.

Re: Hap Was Right About Clyde...
I wonder how Quick and Canzano would have handled Clyde. It's funny and distressing to think about how much their biased coverage influences people's opinions of Zach.
Zach is late a couple of times and is labeled a miscontent? In the blog- they compliment his improving defense and assists, but can't help adding this gratuitous comment:
PHP Code:
Jason checked the stats on the Zach Randolph player page on yahoo! and noticed the following trend:
Zach averages 14.1 ppg w/ zero days rest (on the 2nd of back 2 back games), 18.1ppg w/ one night off, 19.8 w/ two nights off, and 21.2 with 3+ nights off. Someone could use some better conditioning I reckon!
I can't imagine any player not having a drop off based on the amount of time they are given to rest. It's a particularly unfair for someone coming off an injury.
Just my 2 pennies.

how the O's current guys would have handled Clyde? How about how they would have handled Billy Ray... or Big Bill? Of course they maintain that they're just keeping us informed
Anyways back on the thread's topic... Clyde used to pound arena hot-dogs at half-time. Of course he loved his BBQ http://www.stp.uh.edu/vol61/951103/7a.html
So he didn't stretch out/warm up with his teammates, was perpetually late, didn't seem to respect his coaches, had suspect nutrition, and had open running feuds with officials http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/bas...24/ref_grudge/
...and yet he was the main cog on those great Blazer clubs. Too bad that I didn't have Quick and Canzano around to lend their insights.

If Hap was right, who was wrong? That guy was notorious for that type of thing. Was there someone on here preaching of his tremendous work ethic?

I think it might've been that I mentioned it about Clyde when Talkhard (and others) were on their rants about Zach not being "serious" about the team/game because he had been late 4 times to shoot-arounds or a practice. And I wondered what they thought about the fact that Drexler was by far more lazy and less "team first" (in this regard). And, iirc, some didn't believe or care if Drexler was like that.
At least, I think thats what ABM is referencing.
Stomp brings up good points, I do remember Dwight saying things about Drexler, but he got away with all sorts of crap that Quick and Canzano would deem top priority for us fans to know and prove that he should've been traded.

ideology overwhelms objectivity in the press. no news there. journalism schools preach it but it's not something you can teach easily. It's mental, exactly what it takes to be good at anything.
