Re: OT: Raptors to finally Fire Babcock
I think this was the deal that did him in:
Quote:
Raptors Trade Carter To Nets
(December 17, 2004) -- The Toronto Raptors announced Friday they have acquired forward Eric Williams, forward/centre Aaron Williams and centre Alonzo Mourning, along with two first-round draft picks from the New Jersey Nets in exchange for Vince Carter. To complete the transaction, the Raptors have waived centre Jerome Moiso and placed centre Rafael Araujo (lower back spasms) and forward/centre Pape Sow (left knee, tendinitis) on the injured list. The trade is contingent upon exchanged players passing physicals.
Toronto receives the 2005 first-round pick originally belonging to Philadelphia. The pick is protected in the draft’s first eight positions in 2005, first five positions in 2006 and is unprotected in 2007. Toronto also receives the 2006 first-round pick originally belonging to Denver. That pick is protected in the first five positions in 2006, first two positions in 2007 and is unprotected in 2008.
“This trade accomplishes a number of things that will help us now and in the future,” expressed Raptors General Manager Rob Babcock. “In Aaron and Eric Williams we are acquiring two character players who are tough, defensive-minded players. They will improve our defense and rebounding, and they fit the philosophy that we’re establishing in Toronto.
|
basically, they dumped a franchise player for a couple of draft picks which aren't likely to be really valuable.
if Vince Carter and Rasheed Wallace have tought GM's anything, it's that you can't just "take your lumps" when trading your best or second best player and expect to recover quickly.
Indiana may soon learn the same lesson if Peja's back continues to decline.

Re: OT: Raptors to finally Fire Babcock
I think my favorite thing about this whole firing is that Babcock says he didn't see this one coming.
Come on, his team has been crap for the last few years, players have been "defecting", and all he could get for Vince Carter is basically Aaron Williams and two middle first round picks in a weak draft.

I think he would've been (and more importantly, we would have been ) better off had he made the trade with Portland like he originally agree'd to.

oh man would that have been sweet. it really would've been better for Toronto, too, if only because they wouldn't have Vince rubbing it in their nose all the time on the same coast.

Re: OT: Raptors to finally Fire Babcock
Its a shame if true.
Toronto would be in this situation regardless of who was GM. They need to rebuild and getting under the cap (like most teams) became a necessity to accomplish it. VC was laying down and not playing to his capabilities (he's unprofessional and characterless). Araujo hasn't worked out yet also. More importantly, not one player 6'8" or above is doing any better than Araujo. It's looking like a really weak draft in hindsight. Too many youngsters.
