Paul Allen interview....

He discusses the two franchises he owns with Geoffrey C. Arnold here

Arnold:
Quote:
When you're talking about the financial situation with the Blazers, one of the things that has come up is the concern that with all that's going on (in Seattle) and your interest in the Seahawks, you're losing interest in the Blazers and might even sell the team.
Allen:
Quote:
Look, I love being an owner of both franchises. Obviously, the Blazers are my first love as being a professional sports owner. Re-examining the financial situation of the Blazers, it's extremely challenging. It has nothing to do with my love for the team or my desire to bring a winning franchise to Portland. On the financial side, the challenges are really extraordinary.
Arnold:
Quote:
Are you considering selling the team?
Allen:
Quote:
At this point, those are difficult questions. I'd rather focus on the Super Bowl.

I don't particularly like those answers from Paul Allen.....

Ok, that's it! We're taking control of the team now! Everybody ante up and we'll buy the team from Allen.

Re: Paul Allen interview....

Yikes. That is a very disturbing answer by Allen. I assumed he would own the Blazers for life, since a few measly million dollars down the drain is nothing to the 3rd richest guy in the world.

Re: Paul Allen interview....

Hm..I didn't take him saying that the Blazers are his first love as a sign that he might sell the team.

I took this exchange (the bolded parts especially) to mean he's not losing interest in the team, or wanting to sell it.

At this point, those are difficult questions. I'd rather focus on the Super Bowl.
To me, it's just him saying something like this.

"look, how often do the Seahawks go to the Superbowl? Let's talk about that instead of the Blazers. I wouldn't comment on selling the Seahawks if the Blazers were in the NBA finals, nor would I answer it during that time. It' has nothing to do with it. Plus, didn't I just say that I love being the owner of BOTH franchises and that the Blazers are my first love? Read between the lines junior."

we're like his first car, and the Seahawks are his 2nd. We're the nice 68 Camaro, and they're the 68 Mustang that he bought after he tinkered with the Camaro. Now the Camaro is a little ignored, because he wanted to fix up the Mustang. Once he's got that where he wants it, he'll return to the Camaro, and have it re-furbished.

It ain't like he's poor and has to sell one of them either.

Hmmm, I don't know, that is a little disturbing. It'd be easy for him to say he hasn't thought about selling the Blazers. That surprises me.

Ah, but what if what he REALLY wanted was a '69 Cougar or Charger? In that case, he'd be willing to sell either car if he could get what he really wants.

Of course, if you're Paul Allen, you can afford all three.

Re: Paul Allen interview....

What if he really likes being "The Man" in Seattle and is looking for a way to sell the Blazers and buy the Sonics? That really wouldn't surprise me much as a long term goal for him, but given the Blazers' financial mess right now, I think he's going to have to stick it out here for a couple of years until things get headed in the right direction.

Sorry Hap, but I think the man has seriously thought about selling the team. He could have said no, but he didn't.

Great idea.

I'm sure we'll have no trouble agreeing on strategy and personnel moves.

Re: Paul Allen interview....

yeah it sounds that he is tiring of being the Blazer owner to me which has been wearing on him since the Seahawks are in the SB, pulling his interest from the blazers to the seahawks.

Mr Allen could have said "I am not looking to sell the blazers!" he didnt say that, he said he would rather focus on the super bowl. ouch.

His interest in the blazers has been shrinking since 2000

Thats going on an assumption that he likes Cougars, and couldn't get one in the first place. I'd bet that if he wanted to, he could've bought the Sonics earlier, or at least, made it known he did (for all I know he did).

true he could have. but he also could've said that Seattle was his baby, and not the Blazers (of course, he could just be saying that to trick the bidding up!!!). This was, afterall, the Seahawks big moment in the sun, and he's still saying that the Blazers are his baby.

You could say that he's saying that TO the audience he's trying to con into thinking he's not selling, but it seems to be a bit of a stretch. Maybe he just wants to emphasize what good is happening with the Seahawks instead of again talking about the Blazers woes (as if thats new information?).

I bet most fans are tired of talking about the team as though we're on the brink of him selling it or moving the team, or the team continually being in a state of flux.

As for this subject, it just seems like certain fans (as a group) will look for the most vague comments that Paul Allen says, and suggest it's bad for the team stayin in Portland or that he's going to sell the team.

If Paul Allen was going to sell the team the rumors of it would make bigger news than just a few fans on a message board, coming up with vague comments that you have to make a HUGE reach in logic to justify it being about him selling the team. Why would it make bigger news than just a few fans reaching for it?

Because that'd be a big blow to the NBA as a whole, having an owner who's worth almost the combined net worth of the rest of the leagues owners selling his team isn't necessarily good unless he sells it to a Mark Cuban wanna-be and I'm not sure if I want that as an owner or that Portland does either. And if he movies the team? Well, as much as we like to think that the NBA "hates us", they like having strong healthy organizations, and if the Blazers move that's a mark on the NBA's reputation. One of it's stronger (historically speaking) franchises moving because of a 2-3 year bad stretch?

that'd make other teams/owners who want to move have even more fuel to add to their fire.

You honestly think that if the Blazers moved that other teams (Sacramento, Seattle for example) wouldn't then jump on that bandwagaon?

It'd be huge news if Paul Allen was selling the team or thinking of selling the team. Not just 8 people on a message board freaking out about a rather tame "no comment".

Re: Paul Allen interview....

My feeling about Allen is that he's done nothing but run the franchise into the ground. Granted it's been nice having an owner with deep pockets but at this point don't let the proverbial door hit you in the backside Paul. It would take a Blazer GM being more candid than allowable to ever convince me that Paul hasn't been meddling with who we draft, who we keep, and how much the player is paid. Things that should have been left up to the GM's that he hired (to make those decisions). He seems to allow the Seahawks personnel to handle those duties and rightfully so.

I feel that Nash has been unfairly criticized for the Miles and Randolf contracts in other words. He came out before the signings saying he wasn't signing either one to big contracts and then in the eleventh hour he changes his mind? I don't buy it. I think Paul overruled him.
