A new thought...Keeping Joel
I just had a thought about retaining Joel...What, outside of money, is the main reason players leave for other teams? PLAYING TIME.
Right now Joel is playing 25mpg, as a starter. Starters Minutes IMO start at 35mpg and go up from there.
I think that by trading Theo Ratlif by the trading deadline, the organization can send a clear message to Joel, "You are our guy". But as long as Theo is here, Joel will be looking at next year and the Subsequent year as being 2 more years of splitting time with Theo.
IMO Portland needs to trade Theo right now, not because of the financial aspect, but because of the message it can send to Joel.

Good point, but it could backfire if Joel still leaves for some place like Toronto. Then you're left with nothing.

It could indeed, but...Toronto will be at about 43mill this summer with PO picked up and their top 5 pick. So they are maybe 9 mil under the cap. Now here's an interesting wrinkle. Mike James is going for 17ppg 3rpg and 5apg and has a Player option (value 3.8mil) if he opts out they will have to be looking at re-signing him for 5-6 mil to start which while minimal brings it up to up to 45.5 mil or so.
Then there is the Cap hold thing for James, if I understand it right his cap hold is what the maximum he can make would be, based on what I can tell his cap hold (until signed) is about 10mil (300% of previous contract year) so...Torontos effective cap until James is resigned would be about 50mil (subtract his 3.8 from the 43 mil figure)

As long as they take care of Joel first it wouldn't matter if they had to sign James, would it?

Not until Przybilla is resigned.
Even then, I think we need a 3rd center. Przybilla and Ha are both too foul prone to rely on a 2 man rotation. If we draft somebody like Aldridge, Theo can be dealt. Until then, I think he can only be traded if we get a 2nd/3rd string center in return.

They would have to rennounce their rights to James to be able to have the cap room to sign Joel...They would have to sign James 1st then see how much cap they have left to sign Joel.

Joel Pryzbilla is someone the Blazers would want to keep, but he reportedly isn't too enamoured of Portland, according to the Toronto Star. The Raptors are believed to be interested in the center.

Now, the Trailblazers may try to keep the 7-footer and might overpay to do it. But sources say Pryzbilla is hardly enamoured of the Portland situation and would move for the right spot, despite what's being written this year. He’s got some history with Toronto coach Sam Mitchell, too (he hung around the corridor at the Rose Garden for about half an hour after a game there this year just to say hi to Mitchell), and that’s going to play a role in his decision.
Since acquiring Antonio Davis the Raps project to have about 10Mil in capspace.

Wonder if he has changed his mind since he said:
Quote:
“Portland’s my first choice,” he says. “But I try not to think about the contract. The money’s going to be there no matter what. Teams know what I can do. This team knows what I can do.
“Money’s not everything, anyway. I’m set (financially) no matter what. I could walk away from this game tomorrow and be fine. When the time comes, I’ll sit down with my wife and see where we’re at, where this organization is going and whether I fit in.”

in an article in the PDX Tribune about 2 weeks ago.

Re: A new thought...Keeping Joel
The Star prints whatever nonsense the Craptors want it to. Always have despite how ridiculous it sometimes sounds. Maybe there is a financial connection in ownership or something.
