Re: Who really cares if NBA players smoke Pot?

These are the reasons

Quote:
i never touched drugs or alcohol until I was 21

Quote:
My parents kept me from it, until i was 21 and made my own decision

And the fact that you are defending an illegal drug so strongly. It's like the people who smoke cigarettes that can't be convinced it is harmful to them and others.

Re: Who really cares if NBA players smoke Pot?

Those facts you posted show that I was and am not a pot head. 21 is the age we decided in America is your time to enjoy life and try new things. I smoke pot, but not every day, sometimes I go months without. I never drink alcohol, too bad for you health. Again it's not illegal in every state.
the fact that i disagree with the prohibition on marijuana is no different then the people who disagreed with the prohibition on alcohol, but that does not make them alcoholics or me a pothead. Just because I accept its use does not preclude someone or me as a pothead.

You are a bit misinformed...marijuana is NOT proven to "decrease brain cells" as you suggest. You won't find a single reputable source that says that it does. It does seem to affect motivation and cause people to behave lethargicly. It also has negative affects on the lungs and other parts of the respiratory system.

We have a 800 page report on the affects of Marijuana here at my office at OHSU if you would like to read it.

Re: Who really cares if NBA players smoke Pot?

Pot ruined the life of one of my best friends from high school. He went from student body president, varsity athlete, scholarship... to lazy, can't hold a job, divorced, lost visitation rights to his son because he didn't bother to show up in court etc... etc... I can't really talk to the guy anymore because he forgets what he is talking about before he gets to the end of his sentence.

Is it worse than alchohol? Probably not, but I will add while it may not be physically addicting, I think that it can be mentally. Personally I don't really care if other people smoke, and I am not sure I think it should be against the law... certainly it isn't worth spending law enforcement time fighting. That being said... not something I want in my house or around my family.

It's a public report done by pharmaceutical experts. It basically focuses on medicinal uses of marijuana but also covers general affects of the drug both negative and positive. The report is public so anyway can request a copy. It's written using alot of medical terminology though so it's pretty hard to decipher unless you know that stuff. I can hardly understand what is says, the only reason I know is because I have heard the presentations of the report by the researchers.

Re: Who really cares if NBA players smoke Pot?

This thread is LOL-larious.

From a legal standpoint, adults should be able to smoke pot. It should be treated like alcohol: over 21, don't drive. Done and done. Tax the **** out of it, fund our schools. Make engines that run on hemp oil, eliminate dependence on fossil fuels. Make paper out of hemp, less trees need to be cut down. It's a weed, it grows everywhere. God gave us this plant for a purpose.

Blazer Bert had an excellent point in that we tell our children that pot and crack are the same, so that causes harm. Pot is a gateway drug because we tell our children that it's the same as crack, pcp and heroin (same scheduling). So when a kid gets high, and they realize that it's not ruining their life, they may make the conclusion that crack is okay too. Then they smoke crack and ruin their life. Gee, where did they get THAT idea. I've been around pot culture and regular pot users for years. I've been to my share of "stoner parties." Not once have I ever seen anyone doing crack. Or PCP or heroin for that matter.

The entire point of drugs is to take away life's problems, if only for a few hours. ALOT of people shouldn't be doing drugs that are doing drugs. The people who have their **** worked out should be the ones who get high. On occasion. It's a responsibility not to take it too far. Again, I'm talking about all forms of drugs.

ANYWAY, I'd rather not have my professional athletes do it. And by that, I mean the Blazers
Seriously, I'd rather have the entire Laker team get super-stoned the night before our game, instead of the other way around. I think Barkley said it right. There are too many parents relying on other people to be their children's heroes. Although, if your dad is an alcoholic, you'd probably rather look up to a pot smoking professional athlete.

You are so in the wrong. I know scores of people who smoke weed, have good solid jobs and get it done every day. Scores. Most of them make what I consider "good money" too(50k plus a year).

Secondly, if you look at Oregons prison systems, and the problems with overcrowding we have. We spend millions of dollars per year putting people in jail for getting high on Marijuana. Thats right. Putting them in jail because they like to get laughing high and then go buy the local 7-11 out of doritos. Put those Dorito eaters in jail where they belong right! Then we go and give early release to the likes of rapist, drunk drivers and the like so that we can keep the guys with 15 year marijuana sentences in jail, when we could have legal weed, be taxing it, and using the money to run our schools, and educate people about the really destructive drugs, and to finance legal jobs here in the state. We are talking about bringing in a source of $ for state that would create thousands of jobs, helping the state economy in a huge way.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

THANK YOU. I forgot to mention that. Man, if we focused our attention on the CRIPPLING METH PROBLEM many OREGON communities have the way we do on marijuana, our country MIGHT ACTUALLY become a little better.

Re: Who really cares if NBA players smoke Pot?

I think the 'reducing brain cells' thing is a misunderstanding. IIRC, THC bonds to the fatty cells in your body; including your brain which is quite fatty. That's why it takes days or weeks for all the 'evidence' to leave your system (unlike something like, say, B vitamins which are water soluble and flush through almost immediately). IIRC, studies have shown that while present, the THC impedes or slows the firing between the synapses in your brain, which affects your short term memory. Once gone from your system, a person shouldn't have any long-term effects.

Ok I will try to get you a copy if you are really interested. Those are some dedicated parent's of yours if they are willing to read 800 pages. I will try to get a electronic copy or at worst a paper copy for you. The University keeps them under lock and key since although they are public they ussually cost $ to download. We may have a copy here in our office somewhere though.
